A Gutsy Girl’s Guide to 24 Hours in Ljubljana

Nestled in the heart of Europe, Ljubljana, Slovenia’s charming capital, is a city that effortlessly marries the old with the new. With its fairytale-like architecture, pedestrian-friendly streets, and buzzing cultural scene, it's the perfect place to unwind and explore at your own pace. Recognized for its low cost of living and high quality of life, it’s no wonder that Ljubljana has become a sought-after destination for solo women travellers and group travel enthusiasts alike. Whether you're stopping over on your way to another adventure or spending an extra day here before or after your Gutsy Girls Slovenia trip, this city offers a delightful mix of history, nature, and vibrant local culture—all wrapped up in an easy-to-navigate, safe, and welcoming atmosphere.

Morning: Embrace the City's Vibrant Heart

Start with a Leisurely Stroll Through Tivoli Park

Begin your day at Tivoli Park, Ljubljana's largest green space, covering approximately five square kilometers. Designed in the early 19th century, this lush urban retreat is home to scenic walking trails, ornamental flower beds, and historical landmarks like Tivoli Mansion, which now houses the International Centre of Graphic Arts. If you're in the mood for a little culture, check out the open-air Jakopič Promenade, which frequently hosts photography exhibitions. It's a favourite spot for locals to walk, jog, or simply soak up the morning calm before the city fully wakes up.

Explore the Central Market

After your park visit, head to the Central Market, a bustling hub designed by the legendary Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik. Operating daily except Sundays, the market offers an incredible selection of fresh produce, cheeses, meats, and artisanal bread. The covered arcades along the Ljubljanica River house butchers, fishmongers, and delicatessens, while the open-air section overflows with seasonal fruits and vegetables. Don’t miss the chance to try local specialties like Kranjska klobasa (Carniolan sausage) or fresh štruklji (rolled dumplings with various fillings). Engaging with friendly vendors here is one of the best ways to experience Slovenia's culinary culture firsthand.

Midday: Dive into Ljubljana's Rich History

Visit Ljubljana Castle

No trip to Ljubljana is complete without visiting its crowning jewel—Ljubljana Castle. This medieval fortress, perched atop Castle Hill, offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city. While the castle dates back over 900 years, today it’s a lively cultural venue featuring museums, historical exhibits, and even an escape room experience. You can reach it via a scenic hike or take the funicular from Krek Square for a quicker ascent. The castle’s Viewing Tower is a must-visit, providing a 360-degree perspective of Ljubljana’s red-roofed skyline and surrounding Alps.

Discover the National Gallery

Art lovers should carve out time for the National Gallery, which boasts Slovenia’s most extensive collection of fine art. Established in 1918, the gallery houses masterpieces from the medieval period to the 20th century, featuring prominent Slovenian artists like Ivana Kobilca and Rihard Jakopič. The gallery’s permanent collection is a journey through the nation’s artistic evolution, showcasing everything from Gothic religious paintings to Impressionist landscapes. For those who appreciate contemporary works, the neighbouring Museum of Modern Art is also worth a visit.

Afternoon: Savor Local Flavors and Traditions

Lunch at a Traditional Gostilna

For an authentic Slovenian meal, dine at a traditional gostilna (inn), where you can indulge in hearty local dishes. Popular choices include Monstera Bistro, known for its innovative take on traditional Slovenian cuisine, or Gostilna Sokol, where you can try žlikrofi (handmade dumplings) and jota (a comforting sauerkraut and bean stew).
