Types of Skiing Explained: Alpine, Nordic, Touring & SkateBefore You Go
We plan the trips down to the last detail. Flights still get cancelled, bags go missing, and sometimes life at home doesn’t cooperate. Adventure travel insurance is required on every trip we run, and we recommend sorting it the day you book.
Who Covers What
Gutsy Girls and all our providers are fully insured. Every partner we work with is highly vetted and the trips are risk-assessed. Your travel insurance covers anything that might happen to you personally. We advise you to get your travel insurance as soon as you book a trip, not on the way to the airport. Illness, injury or something at home can stop you travelling, and your cover only works for things that happen after you buy it.
The Checklist
Review the itinerary and make sure all the activities (including winter sports) are covered. Your policy should also include hired equipment protection.
In case you get ill or injured during your adventure, ensure emergency treatment, transport, consultations, non-routine prescriptions and repatriation home are included.
Just in case you have to cancel, make sure this is covered in your policy. Always review the list of cancellation events; it usually includes illness and injury as standard.
If your flight is delayed or cancelled, you’ll need to make your own way to our starting location. Ensure the cost of this additional travel is included.
Get cover that protects your bags and gear from damage, loss or theft at any point at any point during your travels, including the trip with us.
Declare any pre-existing medical conditions when you buy your policy. If you don't, your insurance might not be valid. Always read the policy. You shouldn't travel against the advice of your doctor.
The Safety Net
Adventures always come with an element of the unexpected, whether that’s the destination, the conditions or an accident. And that’s why you need the right cover.
From a ski policy that protects you on the slopes to cover for a hiking trip, the right insurance means you won’t be left footing (no pun intended) the bill if things don’t go to plan.
We always look at adventure insurance as a safety net. It doesn’t take away the risk or even the fun. It just makes sure that if anything does happen, your adventure isn’t ruined by high medical or extra travel costs.
Choose a policy that includes:
What Gets Left Out
We’ll say it again for those at the back: you must ensure that all the activities listed in the itinerary are included in your policy! Typically, you have to add activities like skiing, hiking or even horse riding to the policy – they are not included in the standard adventure travel insurance.
FAQs
Yes. It’s mandatory on all our trips because adventure comes with unpredictability (which is also part of the fun). Insurance protects you if something goes wrong before and during your trip, from delays and lost gear to accidents or injuries.
You’ll need adventure travel insurance that covers all the activities on your itinerary. Standard policies often exclude things like skiing, hiking at altitude or horse riding, so make sure these are included. If it’s not clear, call your insurer to check or add them on.
The day you book. If you have already booked and not sorted it yet, do it today. Every day without cover is a day you are not protected if something stops you travelling.
Unfortunately, travel insurance only covers you for events that happen after you’ve purchased your policy. If you cancel your trip before buying insurance, you won’t be able to claim for any money you’ve already spent.
We’ve seen travellers left out of pocket because of unexpected illnesses, injuries or family emergencies that happened before they’d arranged insurance. Buying cover as soon as you book your trip means you’re protected straight away, so you’re not left losing your money if the unexpected happens.
Always declare it when buying your policy. If you don’t, your insurance may not be valid, and you could be left without cover when you need it most.
No, you’ll need to arrange your own personal policy. Gutsy Girls and our local providers are insured for running the trips.
Read your policy carefully and look for an “activities” or “sports” section. If something isn’t listed, contact your provider and add it on as an extra.
It should. Look for policies that include gear protection for both personal and hired kit. That way, you’re not out of pocket if something gets damaged or lost.
Unfortunately, we can’t recommend a specific insurance company as it could be seen as a conflict of interest if you need to make a claim. Read more insurance information here or by simply googling “Adventure travel insurance” — there’s loads of information out there.
This is a great question and does cause a bit of confusion sometimes for people. The Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) gives you access to basic state-provided medical care while visiting EU countries. However, it doesn’t cover destinations outside the EU. Care under the EHIC/GHIC scheme is much the same as NHS care: treatment may be basic, waiting times could be longer and you might have to pay for some services, depending on the local healthcare system.
That’s why it’s vital to also take out comprehensive travel insurance. A GHIC can help you access affordable local care, but it won’t cover private treatment, medical evacuation, getting you home if you’re seriously ill or injured, or non-medical issues like trip cancellations or lost baggage. Having both ensures you’re covered for essential care abroad and any unexpected costs.
