Challenging

Hiking up to 14km daily with 700m of ascent and descents of up to 1,350m is demanding on its own. Add a loaded 8 to 12kg pack and three days of hut-to-hut trekking on tired legs, and this is a serious undertaking. The physical side is only part of it. You’ll be sharing basic mountain huts, and being tired but getting up to hike again the next day is where the real challenge lies. If you’re doing 45 minutes or more of medium to high-intensity cardio three or more times a week, and challenging day hikes don’t faze you, you’re ready to make the step up to hut-to-hut.

You'll Need to Be

  • Able to keep a steady climbing pace uphill with 10kg on your back
  • Doing 45 minutes or more of medium to high-intensity cardio, three or more times a week
  • Comfortable on six-plus hour challenging day hikes before you arrive
  • Weight training for your legs, to power the climbs and protect your knees on the long descents
Skill Level
3

Intermediate

No hut-to-hut experience needed, but you should be a confident intermediate hiker. Skill aside, this trip is a serious physical undertaking, so the Fitness Level is the one to read closely before you book.

You'll Need to Be

  • Confident on rocky, exposed terrain with narrow paths and steep drops
  • Used to hiking with a loaded pack, not carrying weight for the first time
  • Comfortable on long descents, one to two hours at a time, on uneven ground
  • Steady on your feet across variable mountain terrain and weather

The answers

What You're Wondering

Do I need hut-to-hut hiking experience?

No hut-to-hut experience needed, but you do need solid hiking skills. This is for intermediate to advanced hikers who can handle rocky, exposed terrain with a full pack. If you’re comfortable on demanding day hikes, you’ll manage the multi-day section.

How fit do I need to be for this trip?

This is rated challenging for a reason. You’ll hike up to 14km daily with elevation gains up to 700m and drops up to 1,350m, carrying your gear for three consecutive days. You need stamina for 7-8 hour hiking days and confidence on rough, uneven terrain.

What are the mountain huts like?

The mountain huts are basic but clean, and you’ll only be sharing with your fellow Gutsy Girls in private dorms for 4-6 people. It’s part of the authentic alpine experience – early mornings with mountain coffee, hearty meals, and that deep sleep after tough hiking days.

What hiking gear is provided?

You’ll need your own hiking boots, backpack (30-35L), and personal hiking kit. We provide experienced mountain guides, but you carry your own gear between huts.

How exposed are the trails?

Some sections feel exposed with steep drops, but nothing technical that requires climbing gear. You need confidence on rocky paths and a decent head for heights. Our guides assess conditions daily and adjust routes for safety.

What's the deal with the SUP session?

After five days of hiking, Lake Bohinj is your reward. The SUP lesson covers basics so everyone feels confident on the water. It’s optional if your legs need more rest, but most people find it the perfect way to decompress from the mountains.

How do I get to the start point of the trip?

Fly to Ljubljana where our transfer will meet you to make the one hour drive to the start point of the trip. We offer three pick up and drop-off points for the transfer on this trip. please make sure your own travel plans align with these.

What time are the transfers?

Is the itinerary flexible?

Absolutely. Mountain weather can be unpredictable, so our guides adjust daily plans to ensure the best and safest experience. The core hiking adventure remains, but specific routes adapt to conditions.

What happens if weather prevents the hut-to-hut section?

Safety comes first. If conditions are too dangerous for the mountain traverse, we’ll switch to challenging day hikes from hotel bases. You’ll still get the full alpine experience, just with a warm bed each night instead of mountain huts.

Are there showers in the mountain huts?

Unfortunately there are no showers in the mountain huts. If you’d like to freshen up we recommend biodegradable wipes.

The mountain huts do have access to fresh drinking water.

What's the weather like in July and September?

Typical alpine conditions – warm sunny days but temperatures drop at altitude, especially evenings. July averages 20-25°C in valleys, cooler at elevation. September sees 15-20°C with a higher chance of rain. Mountain weather changes fast, so pack layers.

Do I need extra cash for this trip?

Cards work everywhere in Slovenia, but cash is handy for small mountain hut purchases. Budget around €20-30 per day for extras.

How many nights is the trip?

Either five or six, depending on the date you pick. You’ll see both options, with their own prices, in the booking widget. The difference comes down to flight schedules: on some dates you’ll spend the final night in Ljubljana before flying home the next day, which makes it a six-night trip. It’s not something you can adjust, so you can’t add a night to a five-night trip or drop one from a six-night trip. Just pick the date that suits you and you’ll see exactly what you’re getting.
