Whitewater SUP

If you’re a more experienced SUPer, then Slovenia’s whitewater-washed emerald rivers are the place to be. Dial in your technique on glassy alpine lakes, then tackle moving water and small rapids.

Impossibly green waters, nestled between rocky mountains, are another shade in Slovenia’s diverse palette of green spaces. These lively waters will test your paddling skills as you navigate the ups and downs of the river, with just your paddle, board and determination.

Hiking

Hike the Julian Alps where Slovenia’s highest peaks create some of Europe’s most dramatic mountain scenery. No matter the route, elevation and rocky terrain throw in plenty of challenges. When you aren’t climbing peaks, you’ll discover secret swimming spots that only locals know about.

Hiking in Slovenia isn’t just for the mountaineers; there are plenty of hiking trails in and around the mountains, offering a route that suits everyone. They are challenging at times, but totally doable when there’s a crystal-clear waterfall pool waiting at the end.

Your questions, answered

When is the best time to visit Slovenia for an adventure trip?

Slovenia works year-round, which is part of what makes it so good to visit. Summer (June to August) is the peak season for water sports as the rivers and lakes are at their best and warm enough to fall into without too much drama. Spring and autumn are ideal for hiking, with cooler temperatures, fewer crowds and the kind of light that makes the Julian Alps look almost unrealistic. Winter opens up snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and winter hiking, particularly around the Alpine regions. Whenever you go, there’s something worth getting outdoors for.

What's the weather like in Slovenia for outdoor adventures?

Summers are warm and sunny – expect 25–30°C in the valleys, cooler in the mountains. The Soča Valley and Alpine areas can see afternoon thunderstorms in July and August, so mornings tend to be the best time for outdoor activities. Spring and autumn are mild and a little more unpredictable, so layers are your friend. Winters are cold and snowy in the mountains, which is exactly the point.

What should I pack for an adventure trip in Slovenia?

It depends on the season, but we’ll always say layers. For summer trips, pack light with a warm layer for evenings as temperatures drop quickly once the sun goes down if you’re in the mountains. For hiking trips, sturdy boots and a waterproof shell are non-negotiable regardless of the forecast. A dry bag is worth its weight on any trip, as are sunblock, a cap and sunglasses.

In winter the temperatures can drop considerably, especially in the mountains, so you’ll want base layers, warm middle layers and a warm, waterproof coat, as well as gloves, a buff and hat.

What are the must-see places in Slovenia?

The Julian Alps are the obvious headline, with dramatic, accessible trails ranging from challenging multi-day routes to rewarding day hikes. Lake Bled gets a lot of attention (deservedly), but Lake Bohinj just down the road is quieter, equally stunning and a better base for anyone who wants to get away from the crowds. The Soča River valley is worth the trip alone as the water runs an almost implausible shade of turquoise. For something different, the Karst region offers caves, vineyards and a coastline that most people don’t associate with Slovenia at all. Finally Ljubljana isn’t just a bland capital. Instead the city centre looks like something out of a fairytale, complete with a castle, orange slated turrets and dragons!

What is canyoning, and is it suitable for beginners?

Canyoning is essentially navigating a canyon using your whole body and involves hiking, swimming, abseiling down waterfalls and jumping into pools. No technical experience is needed, but a head for heights and a willingness to commit to the jumps are essential. Slovenia has some of the best canyoning terrain in Europe, and it’s one of those activities that sounds terrifying in the description and ends up being a highlight. If you’re comfortable in water and not put off by heights, you’ll be fine.

What makes Slovenia a good destination for adventure travel?

For such a small country, Slovenia punches well above its weight when it comes to adventure travel. In a few hours you can go from Alpine mountain trails to Mediterranean coastline, and the rivers and lakes in between are some of the cleanest in Europe. It’s still relatively under the radar compared to its neighbours, which means the experiences feel more local and less tourist-facing. The food and wine scene is also worth knowing about – the Vipava Valley produces wines you likely won’t have come across before, and that’s a very good reason to explore.
