Trip Guide

Trip Guide: North Macedonia Multi-Activity Adventure

Spend a week in North Macedonia, one of Europe’s best-kept secrets. eBike through a national park, paddleboard to beaches you can only reach by water, and hike to a summit with two countries stretched out below you. In between, enjoy fresh local dishes served up in villages that barely appear on a map, learn all about Macedonian wine, and meet a small group of women who came here for exactly the same reasons you did.

Although you’ll be by beautiful Lake Ohrid, this isn’t a quiet beach trip. Each day you’ll try a new activity, seeing the area from a fresh perspective every time. Any achy muscles can also be stretched and ironed out with daily yoga overlooking the water.

Seven days, three activities, one destination made for adventure.

Getting There

Fly into Tirana Airport (TIA) in Albania. From there, jump on the group transfer, which takes you across the border and directly to your trip start point on the shores of Lake Ohrid, around a 2.5-hour drive through beautiful scenery.

The transfer is a mid-afternoon pick-up at Tirana Airport. There are several direct flights from the UK, and Tirana is a great spot to overnight if you have time before the trip.

What airport do I fly into?

Tirana Airport (TIA) in Albania. Aim to land in time for the group transfer pick-up.

These times align with our recommended flights. You are welcome to book other flights if they match the transfer schedule.

What time is the transfer?

Pick-up from Tirana Airport is at 12:20 and drop-off on departure day is at 17:00. Your flights need to match these times.

How long is the transfer?

Approximately 2.5 hours from Tirana Airport to Lake Ohrid.

Where do I meet the transfer?

We’ll pick you up at Tirana Airport. Your host will share exact meeting details before you travel.

What if my flight is delayed?

If your flight is delayed, the transfer may not be able to wait. We strongly recommend travel insurance that covers delays and missed connections. If you do get caught out, we can help you arrange a private transfer, though this comes at an additional cost. Contact your host on WhatsApp on the day.

What if I arrive on a different day or miss the transfer?

We provide one group transfer on arrival day only. If you’re arriving separately or miss the transfer, you’ll need to make your own way to the accommodation. A private transfer can be arranged for an additional €150 each way – contact the bookings team to organise this. If you’re spending time in Tirana first, just make your way back to the airport in time for the transfer on the trip’s start date.

Fitness & Skill Level

This trip is rated moderate and is designed to be accessible to all experience levels, but don’t let that fool you. You’ll be active every single day across five consecutive days, taking on different activities with a different set of physical demands. No prior experience in eBiking, paddleboarding, or yoga is needed, but a solid baseline of fitness is essential.

Here’s what the week involves:

    • eBike 24km with 450m of elevation gain and loss through Galichica National Park
    • A hike starting a 1,600m, climbing to 2,263m, the highest point in the park
    • A 16km hike with 900m of elevation gain, summiting at 2,260m
    • Two SUP days exploring the rocky coastline and hidden beaches of Lake Ohrid
    • Daily yoga sessions to keep your body moving and your muscles from staging a revolt

Fitness Requirements

Cardio: You need to be able to sustain moderate-to-high intensity activity for several hours at a stretch. Build up to this with regular running, cycling, hiking, or exercise classes in the lead-up to the trip.

Hiking-specific prep: The two summit hikes are the most demanding days on the trip, particularly the Black Rock trek where you’ll tackle 900m of elevation gain. Get out on hilly terrain before you arrive and practise on rocky, uneven ground if you can. Confidence on your feet across varied terrain matters as much as raw fitness.

Other considerations: You need to be able to ride a bike to join the eBike day – the motor helps with the climbs, but doesn’t replace the need to pedal and balance. Our eBikes can carry up to 120kg. For the paddleboarding days, you must be able to swim and be confident in the water.

How fit do I need to be?

A good level of fitness is essential. You’ll be active every day across a variety of activities, including two full summit hikes with significant elevation gain. You don’t need to be an athlete, but you should be comfortable with sustained physical effort across back-to-back days.

Do I need previous experience in any of the activities?

No prior experience in eBiking, paddleboarding, or yoga is required. You do need to be able to ride a bike for the eBike day, and you must be able to swim 100m for the paddleboarding days.

Do I need to be a strong swimmer?

You don’t need to be a strong swimmer, but you must be able to swim and be confident in the water.

What does a typical active day actually involve?

Days vary, but expect several hours of sustained activity, whether that’s hiking rocky mountain terrain, pedalling through a national park, or paddling along the lake coastline. Daily yoga is built in to help your body recover between activities.

Can I opt out of activities?

We really want every Gutsy Girl to have a go at everything on this trip. If you plan to skip an activity, please let your host know. We don’t offer discounts, refunds, or alternatives for missed activities.

Sleep & Eat

You’ll spend the first five nights at a family-run guesthouse on the edge of Galichica National Park, right on the shores of Lake Ohrid. It’s rustic, full of character, and the kind of place where you’ll eat homemade Macedonian food and watch the sun go down over the lake from the terrace. On night six, you’ll move to a cosy mountain resort tucked into the hillside at the foot of the Jablanica mountain range. Both twin and private rooms are available, although we have a limited number of each room option. There’s no single supplement.

Food is a genuine highlight of this trip. Expect fresh, locally sourced Macedonian cooking throughout the week, including hearty, filling dishes built around fresh fruit and vegetables, pies, meat, cheeses, and pulses, all served in the middle of the table to share. Highlights include a lakeside dinner paired with a proper introduction to Macedonian wine, and a hands-on session as you learn how to cook a traditional Macedonian dish. All meals are included every day. From arrival dinner to breakfast on the final day.

Most dietary requirements can be accommodated, although options may be more limited than you’re used to, especially for vegans. Let the bookings team know before you arrive.

What is the accommodation like?

You’ll spend five nights in a family-run guesthouse on the shores of Lake Ohrid, right on the edge of Galichica National Park. It’s rustic, full of character and with a terrace that overlooks the lake. On night six you’ll move to a mountain resort at 1,420m at the foot of the Jablanica range.

Are towels supplied?

Yes towels are provided at both hotels, although please also bring a quick dry or beach towel for the watersport days. You can’t take hotel towels to the lake.

Is there a laundry service?

Yes, a laundry service is available at both accommodations, however there may be an additional cost to use this.

Can you handle my dietary requirements?

Most dietary requirements can be accommodated, although options may be far more limited than you’re used to at home, particularly for vegans. Please get in touch with the bookings team before booking to confirm your requirements.

Do I have to do the wine tasting?

The wine tasting is done as part of the meal, but you don’t have to drink. Soft drinks will be available. Please note we don’t offer discounts if you choose not to participate.

Do we eat together or separately?

Usually meals are a shared, social affair and dishes are served in the centre of the table Macedonian-style. It’s a big part of the experience.

Weather

The trip runs in late summer, when North Macedonia is warm and dry at lake level, although it can be cooler in the mountains. Afternoon showers are also possible at altitude, so pack for all weathers.

Take sun safety seriously throughout the trip, but especially on the SUP days as the sun’s rays will reflect off the water and cause you to burn quicker.

Your guides will always manage the trip with safety as the first priority. If conditions mean an activity needs to be adjusted or rescheduled, that call will be made on the day.

What is the weather like in summer and early autumn?

Warm and dry at lake level with temperatures in the high 20s°C. At altitude during the hikes, it’s noticeably cooler and afternoon showers are possible.

Is the itinerary flexible?

Yes. If the weather doesn’t play ball, your guides will adjust the plan accordingly. Safety is always the first priority, and there are alternative options available if needed.

What's the worst weather scenario?

An activity may need to be rescheduled or replaced if conditions are unsafe. Your guides are experienced and will make the right call on the day.

Where can I find the weather forecast?

Check a local Macedonian weather source before you start packing. An accurate weather forecast will also be available in your customer portal after booking.

Good to Know

Money: Credit and debit cards work almost everywhere, but carry some North Macedonia Denar (MKD) for small personal expenses. It’s not an expensive destination – you won’t need much extra cash beyond souvenirs or additional drinks with meals.

Communication: WiFi is available at both hotels but can be patchy in these remote mountain locations. Mobile phone coverage varies in the national parks. Consider it a chance to properly disconnect and focus on the incredible scenery around you.

Emergency communication is handled through your guide who has local knowledge and contacts. The Gutsy Girls host ensures smooth logistics and acts as your main point of contact for any trip-related needs.

Local Customs: North Macedonia is welcoming and straightforward for visitors. No special cultural considerations affect your hiking experience, though learning a few basic words in Macedonian is always appreciated by locals.

Why aren't all guides and instructors female?

We work with the best guides available, male or female. There are fewer women in outdoor guiding roles, so we prioritise expertise and guest experience. We vet every guide carefully and monitor feedback closely to ensure all guides align with our ethos and standards. We also hope more trips like ours encourage more women to find new activities and become guides themselves.

Why is travel insurance mandatory, and what happens if I get injured?

We always hope our trips will run smoothly, but if something does go wrong we want to ensure all our guests are covered. That’s why travel insurance is mandatory on all our trips.  Please make sure your policy includes injury, medical evacuation, flight delay, missed transfers and all the activities you’ll be doing on this adventure.

Your guides are also trained in first aid and will manage any incident on the ground. All our partners also have medical procedure plans in place to ensure your safety and medical care is put front and centre.

How many guests will be on this trip?

Max 7 guests.

Is tipping expected?

Tipping is not compulsory on our adventures, but if you’ve had a great trip and brilliant service, a tip for your guide or host is always appreciated. We recommend giving 1200-1800 MKD, or whatever you can or feel is the right amount.

Packing Tips

Layering is key on this trip. Down by the lake you’ll be warm, but the two summit hikes can take you into a different weather climate entirely. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, merino or synthetic, never cotton, then add a light fleece midlayer and pack a waterproof shell in your daypack just in case.

Footwear: Hiking boots with proper ankle support are essential for the two hikes as the terrain is rocky, uneven, and involves significant elevation. Broken-in boots are non-negotiable, as brand new boots on a 16km mountain hike is a bad idea. Bring water shoes or sandals too for the SUP and beach days.

Day pack: A 15–20 litre daypack is ideal for carrying layers, water, snacks, sunscreen, and anything else you need out on the trail or on the water each day.

For the SUP days you will get wet, so a swimsuit or quick-dry shorts and a rash vest or lightweight top work well. Also bring a dry bag for your phone, sunscreen and anything else you don’t want soaked.

Are hiking boots mandatory?

Yes. Proper hiking boots with ankle support are essential for the hikes. The terrain is rocky and involves significant elevation so can’t be attempted in trainers.

What size daypack do I need?

A 15–20 litre daypack is ideal for carrying layers, water, snacks, sunblock and essentials.

What should I wear for paddleboarding?

You will get wet, so we recommend wearing a swimsuit with quick-dry shorts and a rash vest or lightweight top. Bring a dry bag for anything you don’t want soaked.

What should I prioritise in hand luggage?

If you’re checking in your luggage we recommend wearing your hiking boots and packing any personal medication and your most essential kit into hand luggage. Luggage delays can happen, don’t let them ruin your first hike day.
