Four Activities, One Trip
Can’t choose between snowshoeing, dog sledding, snowmobiling or backcountry skiing? This active Lapland trip has the lot.
Snowshoe through frozen wilderness, mush your own husky team, and tear across snow-covered landscapes on a snowmobile. This is an authentic Arctic adventure, not those coach tours with 40 people in matching snowsuits.
Stay in an eco-hotel with traditional food sourced from local hunters and foragers. Heat up in the sauna, then shock your system with an ice bath. No experience needed – just turn up ready to try it all.
An Active Agenda
No Hidden Costs
Wilderness treks along frozen rivers and through historic villages
A half-day driving your dog team through Arctic wilderness
A three-hour guided ride through snowy landscapes
An introduction to touring skis on flat terrain
Sauna, hot tub and ice bathing
Sustainable forest accommodation with geothermal heating and woodland views
Breakfasts, lunches and three-course dinners, locally sourced
Local guides for all activities and your Gutsy Girls host
Single timed transfers to and from Umeå Airport or train station
Activity Overview
Love hiking? This is the winter version. Strap snowshoes onto your boots and walk on top of the snow instead of sinking through it. The wide frames distribute your weight so you can explore snowy backcountry that’s usually off-limits.
New to winter sports? No problem, this winter activity needs no technical skills. A local guide will show you how to put on your snowshoes before taking you through Lapland’s powdery, untracked snow.
Activity Overview
Backcountry Nordic skiing will challenge your balance as you slide across unmarked landscapes and gain speed on small slopes. These aren’t your typical cross-country skis, instead you’ll try skiing on traditional wooden skis from the area, and they’ve got personality.
You’ll spend two hours sliding across snow with a guide who knows the terrain and will teach you how to stay upright. Most of the time at least.
Activity Overview
Meet your husky team and learn how fast these dogs can move. You’ll take turns being passenger and driver of your own sled as you speed through hilly terrain with a guide supervising. When the dogs hit an uphill, hop off and help push – they’ll do most of the work, but you need to give them a hand.
After the run, you’ll have more time with your dog team (who’ll be much calmer and up for cuddles by then).
Activity Overview
Time for some serious speed. Share a snowmobile with another Gutsy Girl and take turns tearing across frozen lakes and snowy terrain for three hours.
There’s no gears to worry about, just accelerate and go. We’ll start slowly while you get comfortable, then let you loose where you can really open it up.
No driver’s licence? No problem, just ride as a passenger and enjoy the rush.
Activity Overview
Heat up in the sauna, soak in the outdoor hot tub, then shock your system with an ice bath.
The heat melts away every ache, then the ice bath hits you with an adrenaline rush.
Activity Overview
Meet Sami reindeer herder Jon-Krista and feed his herd. These shy animals usually avoid people, so this is a unique chance to meet them up close. Sit around a campfire and hear stories about life as a herder.
Learn about the Sami, the indigenous people, and how they live alongside nature.
The Destination
Your Adventure Starts Here
Fly into Umeå, where we'll pick you up for the hour-ish transfer out to the eco-hotel. Check in, settle into your room, and get the full rundown on the week ahead.
First three-course dinner at the lodge and the chance to meet the women you'll be sharing the week with.
Get kitted out in your winter gear, then head straight out on a five-hour snowshoe hike. You'll cross the frozen Ume river and follow the old mill stream through a historic stretch of the valley, reading the snow for wildlife tracks as you go.
Stop out in the landscape to build a fire and have lunch, then snowshoe back to the lodge to warm up.
Dinner at the lodge, then back out for a two-hour night snowshoe. The forest after dark is a different place, and if the sky's clear you might catch the northern lights.
Head out to meet Sami reindeer herder Jon-Krista and his herd. Feed the reindeer, sit round the campfire, and hear what life as a herder actually involves over coffee and lunch.
A three-hour snowmobile safari deep into the wilderness. You'll share a snowmobile and take turns driving across the frozen landscape.
Back to the lodge, over dinner you can discuss whose driving licence should be revoked.
A five-hour snowshoe hike up Hemkälen, with a lunch stop at the top looking out over the Ume river valley before you make your way back down.
Back at the lodge, warm up in the sauna and hot tub. Then, if you're brave, try out the ice bath too.
Relax over dinner after a full day.
A two-hour backcountry ski tour built for beginners. You'll start flat on the frozen river to find your feet, then head out onto Granö island.
Lunch at the lodge, then a half-day dog sledding tour. You'll take turns driving your own team through the wilderness.
Enjoy a farewell dinner at the hotel together.
Breakfast, then the transfer back to Umeå airport for your flight home. That's a wrap.

The Answers
Not at all. This trip is designed for beginners who want to try out a range of snowy sports. Our guides will provide instruction and support throughout, just bring your determination and drive to learn something new.
Think manageable challenges – you’ll be learning new things, tackling really cold temperatures and being active every day, but you’re not climbing Everest. All our activities build in plenty of time for breaks to refuel.
We provide snowshoes, hiking poles, skis, ski poles, and all activity equipment.
You can also rent a complete winter clothing kit for £65.
You can rent a complete winter clothing bundle for £65 if you don’t have your own winter gear.
This includes:
No prior experience is needed, but you must have a valid driving licence to operate the snowmobile. If you don’t have a licence, you can take your throne as a passenger princess, although you’re more likely to get cold. Two people share one snowmobile, taking turns driving during the tour.
Fly into Stockholm Arlanda, then take a domestic flight to Umeå in time to meet the transfer.
10 Jan, 7 Feb & 28 Feb departures
10 Mar departure
Transfers run on a fixed schedule and can’t be delayed, even if your flight is listed in our suggestions. If your flight is late or cancelled, you’ll need to make your own way to the start location. We strongly recommend travel insurance covering delays and missed connections.
Proper Arctic winter, whichever month you pick. Temperatures average -10°C to -20°C and can drop lower in a cold snap, but it’s a “dry” cold that feels less harsh than the damp cold back home. There’s deep, reliable snow throughout.
January is the coldest and darkest, with long blue twilight and the best northern lights odds. February keeps the cold and snow but the daylight starts creeping back. By the March trip, days are longer and brighter and the cold is a touch softer, with snow still deep underfoot.
Daylight is limited across the whole season, but there’s always enough for the day’s activities, and the low sun and long twilight are half the magic. Want the northern lights? Go January or February. Want more daylight? March is your one.
Sweden has very high levels of animal welfare and strict regulations around keeping groups of dogs. We’ve worked with our partners in Sweden to identify the most well-cared for and suitable kennels to host our dog sledding activities.
