Tyinkrysset, Norway

Ever watched ski tourers disappear into the backcountry and thought "I want in on that"? Well this is it. Your week in the Norwegian mountains, learning to earn every single turn. We're talking climbing up untouched slopes, navigating wild terrain, and skiing down runs you've climbed with your own two legs.

No touring experience? Doesn't matter. Bring solid intermediate skiing, decent fitness, and the determination to try something new. You'll start with the fundamentals and build up to planning your own routes through Jotunheimen's raw, alpine wilderness.

Picture this: travelling on a vintage Bombardier snowcoach to reach new routes deep into the national park, evening sessions plotting tomorrow's adventure, and post-mountain sauna sessions by the river.

Stay in a comfortable mountain hotel with hot showers, private bathrooms, and hearty three-course dinners loaded with local Norwegian ingredients.

Ready to find out what you've been missing?

Location

Tyin sits at 1,000m above sea level between Lake Tyin and Filefjell, where the mountains meet the fjords at the gateway to Jotunheimen National Park. One of Southern Norway's snowiest areas, winter brings deep powder, ski runs stretching through mountains and forests, and plenty of room for back country skiing. Forget the tourist-packed slopes though, this is where wilderness enthusiasts come to let loose, away from the crowds.

Activities

Ski Touring

Ski touring is skiing without the lifts and off the pistes. You attach climbing skins to your skis and head uphill under your own power. At the top, rip off the skins and ski back down through untracked snow. It's more effort than resort skiing, but the payoff? Silent peaks, sweeping views, and terrain most skiers never see.

You'll earn every descent and feel it in your legs. No touring experience needed, just solid intermediate skiing and decent fitness.

Included:

  • Full ski touring equipment rental

  • Climbing skins and avalanche safety gear

  • Professional mountain guides

  • Avalanche awareness training

Snowcoach

Travel in a retro Bombardier snowmobile on a snowcoach trip to Eidsbugarden for a remote ski tour experience. These large covered snowmobiles are one of the only ways to reach this far into the Jotunheimen mountains and are living history, transportation and a tourist attraction combined!

Included:

  • Ride in a vintage snowmobile

  • Remote ski tour experience

Sauna

After a long day in the mountains, head to the riverside sauna. Perched beside the Begna river with Mt. Skørsnøse dominating the view, this is where tired legs recover and minds switch off. Sit in the heat, watch the steam rise, and feel your muscles unknot.

Included:

  • Three sauna sessions throughout the week

  • Riverside location with mountain views

Fitness and Experience Level

  • This trip is rated moderate. It requires solid intermediate skiing ability. You should be comfortable on red runs and ready to learn something completely new. Decent fitness is essential; you'll be moving up and downhill on skis for several hours each day. No previous touring experience required, just bring determination, layers, and a readiness to embrace the challenge.

  • Daily Activity: 4-6 hours on snow each day. You'll be climbing uphill on skis, then skiing back down. The uphill sections require stamina and endurance; think sustained effort over technical difficulty.

Terrain: You’ll start on open mountain terrain with gradual ascents, progressing to longer tours with steeper hills in the national park as the week progresses.

Skiing Ability: You need to be confident on red runs and comfortable skiing in varied snow conditions. The downhill skiing isn't technically difficult, but you'll be skiing off-piste in potentially variable snow.

Consecutive Days: Four full days of ski touring with no rest days. You need the fitness to handle back-to-back mountain days.

Weather: Norwegian mountain weather can be unpredictable. Be prepared for cold temperatures, wind, and changing conditions.

  • This is for beginners to ski touring, so you’ll be learning a new skill while covering serious mountain terrain. Your legs will be tired, you'll work harder than resort skiing, but you'll access terrain and views most skiers never see. If you're fit, love learning new skills, and are excited about backcountry exploration, you'll thrive.

  • A cosy mountain lodge serves as home for the week. Twin and private rooms with private facilities, that riverside sauna, and a yoga space with mountain views. Comfortable, practical, and positioned perfectly for accessing the trail network.

  • All meals are included, from dinner on arrival to lunch on departure. Three-course dinners showcase local Norwegian ingredients—think reindeer, warming soups, and dishes designed to refuel tired legs. Breakfasts set you up for mountain days, and packed lunches keep you going on the slopes.

We accommodate most dietary requirements with advance notice. Just make sure to tell us early as sourcing specialty ingredients in the mountains takes planning.
