Tyinkrysset, Norway

Never skied downhill before? This seven day programme takes you from complete beginner to confidently carving down the mountain. It’s small group coaching with experienced instructors who know how to help you get the basics down, plus a mid-week break kayaking Norway's longest and deepest fjord.

Each day builds your technique - from your first wobbly turns to flying down runs you couldn't imagine tackling at the start of the trip. Structured morning coaching with free afternoons to practice means you'll progress faster than you thought possible. By day seven, you'll have actual downhill skiing skills and the buzz that comes from nailing it.

Stay in a newly renovated mountain hotel with riverside sauna sessions and three-course dinners featuring local Norwegian ingredients. Everything’s sorted so you can focus on one thing: learning to ski.

Location

Tyin sits at 1000m above sea level between Lake Tyin and Filefjell, where the mountains meet the fjords at the gateway to Jotunheimen National Park. One of Southern Norway's snowiest areas, winter brings deep powder, prepared trails and ski runs stretching through forests and high mountains. Forget the tourist-packed slopes though - this is where wilderness enthusiasts come to let loose, away from the crowds. It's positioned midway between Oslo and Bergen, yet feels remote once you're surrounded by glaciers and high mountain terrain.

The Ski Resort

The resort offers varied terrain, from wide, gentle slopes perfect for beginners to steeper runs that'll challenge you by the end of the week. It’s small compared to mega-resorts, but this just means no lift queues and actual space to practice without dodging crowds.

Activities

Learn to Ski

Our seven-night programme takes you from never-skied-before to hitting your turns down the mountain. No prior experience needed, just show up ready to push yourself. You'll get structured lessons in a small group with experienced instructors who know how to teach from the basics up. We'll celebrate each step and make sure you're solid before levelling up.

On this trip expect a mix of proper coaching, alongside free afternoons to practice, meaning rapid progress and building confidence without the burnout. By the end of the week, you'll have aching legs and actual downhill skiing skills. Worth every run.

Included:

  • Five days guided skiing instruction

  • Ski equipment rental (skis, boots, poles)

  • Small group coaching

Winter Kayaking

Mid-week, we swap skis for paddles and head to Norway's longest and deepest fjord. A different kind of challenge that rests your ski legs while your upper body does the work.

Paddle between towering mountains, surrounded by the kind of landscape that makes Norway legendary. No kayaking experience needed, our guides will teach you the moves. Warm up afterwards in a mobile sauna. For the really brave, there’s also time for a dip in the winter-cold fjord.

Included:

  • Expert kayaking guide

  • All kayaking equipment

  • Mobile sauna session

  • Optional polar plunge

Riverside Sauna

After a long day in the mountains, head to the riverside sauna. Perched beside the Begna river, with Mt. Skørsnøse dominating the view, this is where tired legs recover and minds switch off. It’s the kind of reset that means you'll actually be ready for the slopes again tomorrow.

Included:

  • Three sauna sessions

  • River views

  • Post-ski recovery sessions

Fitness and Experience Level

  • This trip is rated moderate. You'll ski every day for five days, building skills progressively from beginner slopes to steeper terrain. Daily activity lasts 6-7 hours on the slopes, with breaks for lunch and rest when needed.

  • Duration: 6-7 hours active each day on the slopes, normally split between two sessions

Physical Demand: Ski lifts get you up the mountain, but don't be fooled - skiing is hard work, especially when you're learning. Your thighs will burn and you'll use muscles you didn't know existed.

Gliding: If the sensation of sliding makes you panic, skiing probably isn't for you. The whole sport is about controlled gliding.

Falling: You will fall over. Repeatedly. That's how everyone learns. If you can't laugh it off and get back up, this might not be your trip.

Cold: Nordic mountains in winter mean temperatures regularly drop below freezing. You'll generate heat when moving, but standing still at the top of a lift can be bitter. We'll send you detailed layering advice so you're not freezing your arse off.

Consecutive Days: Four days of skiing back-to-back is tiring, even for fit people. You'll ache, but that's part of it.

  • The reality: Your legs will be tired by day three. You'll fall over (everyone does), your thighs will burn on steeper slopes, and there'll be moments when you question why you're doing this. Then you'll nail a turn, cruise down a run you couldn't manage yesterday, and remember exactly.

The speed: You need to be comfortable picking up speed on a slope. We're not talking black runs, but you will gather momentum.

Fitness requirements: You need decent cardiovascular fitness for consecutive days on the slopes. Skiing uses different muscles than most regular exercise - especially quads and core. If you're doing regular gym sessions, running, or cycling three times per week, you'll manage fine. Strong legs and good balance make learning easier, as does mental resilience - learning something new as an adult is hard!

Who this suits: Adventurous women who want to learn a mountain sport without being patronised. If you've always wanted to ski but didn't have the confidence or the crew to try it with, this is your chance. Come ready to work, fall, get back up, and celebrate every small win with other women doing exactly the same thing.

  • Stay in newly renovated rooms with private bathrooms, proper beds, and views straight onto the mountains. After days spent on the slopes, you'll be glad of the comfort.

  • All meals are included, from dinner on arrival to lunch on departure. Three-course dinners showcase local Norwegian ingredients - think reindeer, warming soups, and dishes designed to refuel tired legs. Breakfasts set you up for mountain days, and packed lunches keep you going on the slopes.

We accommodate most dietary requirements with advance notice. Tell us early - sourcing specialty ingredients in the mountains takes planning.
