Sardinia's East Coast isn't your typical hiking destination. While tourists flock to the beaches, you'll be accessing them the hard way: on foot, through terrain that keeps most people out and the landscape unspoiled. This is a week of hiking ancient shepherd's trails that don't make it into guidebooks, tackling sections of the legendary Selvaggio Blu, and camping in spots you'd never find on your own. You'll trek to beaches only reachable after hours of walking, sleep under canvas on the sand, share meals with a shepherd's family, and take in every single view.
This isn’t a gentle introduction to hiking. You'll be on your feet for five consecutive days, with two nights of wild camping—no showers, minimal facilities—and terrain that demands a head for heights and solid fitness. But in return you get crystal-clear coves where you might be the only people swimming, clifftop trails with views over an untouched coastline, and the kind of experience that reminds you why you started hiking in the first place. This is Sardinia for hikers who want more than a scenic stroll.
Location
Sardinia's East Coast is built for hiking. While most visitors stick to beaches and resorts, the coastal paths and countryside around them are quickly becoming known as a hiker's paradise. The landscape means many beaches and trails are only accessible on foot or by boat, keeping the area natural and undeveloped.
Over six nights, you'll see why the East Coast belongs on every hiker's list. Ancient shepherd's trails, coastal paths cutting through dense Mediterranean scrub, forest tracks, limestone cliffs - each day brings different terrain and a new adventure.
Activities
Hiking
This is your chance to hike Sardinia's rugged East Coast. Five days trekking ancient shepherd's paths, tackling steep coastal climbs, and covering sections of the Selvaggio Blu, one of Italy's most challenging multi-day hikes. You'll wind through dense Mediterranean forest, follow rivers to hidden coves, and reach clifftops with views that make the effort worthwhile.
This trip suits anyone with hiking experience who's ready to move from day hikes to off-grid overnight expeditions (with hotel stays at the start and end). Ground support moves your main kit by van and boat, so you only carry a daypack with layers, water, sunscreen, and (all important) snacks.
Swimming
Crystal blue waters, bays only accessible after a morning's hike, and evening swims as the sun drops. The coastal paths offer plenty of chances to cool off and ease tired muscles in the Mediterranean. Clear waters are ideal for snorkelling and spotting marine life.
Wild Camping
Three nights camping in the Sardinian countryside, two of them completely off-grid. No electricity, no showers, very limited toilet facilities. What you get instead: incredible locations, meals with serious scenery, a real taste of Sardinia's countryside, and brilliant women to share it with.
Shepherd’s Stay
One night camping at a shepherd's farm for a taste of Agriturismo. Basic facilities, first-class hospitality. Pitch your tent, enjoy dinner made from fresh local produce, and—here's the win—access to a hot shower.
Fitness and Experience Level
-
Difficulty
This hiking holiday is designed for intermediate to advanced hikers ready to try a wild camping adventure, with stays in solid accommodation bookending the experience.
The camp-to-camp section involves three consecutive days hiking on demanding terrain, covering up to 14km per day with significant ascents and descents. A good level of fitness is essential, as is a head for heights and confidence on rocky, uneven paths and exposed terrain.
-
Duration: Seven days, six nights and you'll be hiking for five of them.
Distance: Around 47km total across the week. Daily distances range from 6.5km to 14km.
Elevation: Hills every day. The biggest climb is around 685m. Daily elevation gain ranges from +200m to +685m. Daily elevation loss ranges from -135m to -700m.
Terrain: Ancient shepherd's trails, coastal paths through dense Mediterranean scrub, forest tracks, and limestone cliffs. There’s also rickety staircases built by local shepherds in some sections. Varied terrain throughout.
Heights: You need a head for heights on this trip. You'll hike along narrow balcony paths overlooking the mediterranean sea.
Consecutive Days: Five days of hiking back-to-back.
Accommodation: Two nights in basic twin/triple rooms at a hiker's refuge, two nights wild camping, one night at a shepherd's farm, and one night in a hotel to finish. There’s no private rooms available-you'll share rooms, but will have your own tent.
Off-Grid Living: Two nights wild camping with no shower access and limited toilet facilities.
Weather: Coastal Sardinia in summer means heat, sun, and occasional ocean breezes. The weather and sea conditions can shift plans, so flexibility is needed.
-
For anyone who loves hiking, enjoys a challenge, and is ready for three nights camping in the Sardinian countryside, this is the trip. You should be comfortable hiking multiple days in a row on steep, uneven terrain, have a strong sense of adventure and a willingness to embrace wilderness living and everything that comes with it.
-
You'll mix it up across the week: two nights in a hiker's refuge, two nights wild camping (no showers, minimal toilets), one night camping at a shepherd's farm with actual facilities, and your final night at a hotel. Private rooms aren't an option, but you'll have your tent to yourself when camping. We provide the tent and mat; you bring your sleeping bag and pillow. It's basic, authentic, and part of what makes this trip what it is.
-
Delicious local food throughout—fresh salads and sandwiches for lunch, dinners at local restaurants, and meals delivered by boat as you chill on the beach. We can cater for dietary requirements, but be aware: this isn't a tourist hotspot, so vegan options aren’t available.. Vegetarian and gluten-free? No problem. If you have specific dietary needs, get in touch before booking so we can talk it through.
