Hiking

Fully guided and women-only, this is a day of real hills within easy reach of London. You will climb, drop and climb again through the Chilterns, with the scenery changing every mile and a group of like-minded women to walk it with.

The Wendover Loop is 15km of rolling hills, ancient woodland, working farms and small hamlets, with long views from the tops. It is hilly and asks for a bit more stamina than our other day hikes, but if you are comfortable with some elevation and can cover 3-4km an hour, you will be fine.

The route finishes back in Wendover, with a pub garden and a cold drink for tired legs.

Your questions, answered

I haven't done much hiking before. Can I still join?

Yes, this is a good first long walk. It’s a ready-made hiking group, so you just need to turn up. The route is hilly, but the pace is steady and it’s the distance and the climbing you’re building up to rather than anything technical.

Am I fit enough?

You need to be happy walking 15km at about 3-4km an hour, over roughly five and a half hours, with some climbing along the way. There’s a lunch break and stops for photos. More experienced walkers are welcome too, this one is about the hills and the company rather than the challenge.

What is the minimum age?

All Gutsy Girls events are for over 18s only.

Am I too old?

No. Our trips welcome adventurous women of all ages, from 18 to 70+. Most guests are in their 30s and 40s, but it’s your mindset, not your birth year, that matters.

Can I come solo?

Definitely. The vast majority of guests on this hike come solo. We’re a friendly bunch, so just come as you are.

What will we eat?

Please bring a packed lunch and some snacks to keep you going for the day. There may also be a chance to buy extra drinks and snacks along the route.

Can I bring my dog?

We love dogs, but unfortunately they’re not allowed on this hike.

Can I get there by train?

Yes, we picked the Wendover Loop because it’s easy to reach from London. It’s a loop, so it starts and finishes at the same place, Wendover station. Take the Metropolitan line to Amersham and then two stops on Chiltern Railways, or go direct from Marylebone.

Is there parking?

You’ll find car parks at and around Wendover station, where we’ll be meeting. Please check online for parking charges. Another site to look for parking is JustPark.

Can I store my belongings?

Please only bring what you’ll need for the hike and what you can carry in your backpack, as there’s nowhere to leave extra belongings and valuables.

Are there bathroom facilities en route?

There are limited toilet facilities on this route. There are toilets at Wendover station at both the start and the finish, and there may be a chance to use the bathroom in a pub or cafe along the way. Otherwise, nature provides.

What do I wear?

British weather likes to keep us on our toes, so please arrive dressed for the activity and the conditions.

  • Sportswear like leggings, or hiking trousers / shorts and wicking t-shirts
  • Clothes without heavy seams that won’t rub and will dry quickly if it gets wet
  • Layers you can take on and off throughout the day
  • Walking shoes / hiking boots or trainers with good support and grip (not Converse!)*
  • Raincoat

* We highly recommend hiking boots or shoes for your safety and comfort when walking. If you do choose to wear trainers, please make sure they’re supportive and have good grip. You won’t be able to join if you wear Converse or plimsoll style shoes.

The weather forecast doesn't look great, what should I do?

Please leave the weather watching to us. British weather is unpredictable and unless it’s awful, we’ll still hike.

Your guide will be monitoring conditions in the lead-up to your hike and we’ll be in touch if we need to cancel.

I'm running late!

Please contact the Gutsy Girls WhatsApp group you’ll have been invited to. We’ll try to accommodate you, but we need to be fair to the group and we can’t guarantee we’ll be able to wait.

I haven't received a booking confirmation?

Please check your spam folders before contacting us. Hotmail in particular likes to put our emails in junk mail. You’ll need to add bookings@gutsygirls.co.uk to your safe list.

What if I can't make it?

Bookings are non-refundable and can’t be moved to another date, as we commit to our guides in advance for every booking. If you can’t make it, email us with your name, the trip and the date so we know not to wait for you.

You’re welcome to pass your place to a friend. Just let us know her name and email at least 48 hours before, and we’ll move the booking over.
