Enjoy everything a Finnish winter has to offer on this multi-activity adventure trip, ideal for winter sports beginners.
Spend 6 days exploring the wilderness of Finland’s Hossa National Park by snowshoe, ebike and cross-country skis. Unwind and relax in a Finnish sauna, or (for those brave enough) take a dip in a natural ice bath.
We’ll disconnect from reality further on an overnight expedition to a secluded off-grid cabin, where you might even catch a glimpse of the northern lights.
Explore the snowy landscapes, try new winter sports and enjoy the natural beauty of a Finnish winter wonderland.
Location
Dense forest where snow lies waist-deep and wolf tracks cross your trail. Hossa National Park sits in Finland's far east, hours from the crowded Lapland tourist circuit - 90km of frozen trails perfect for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and fat biking through terrain that stays locked in winter from December through March. Reindeer herds migrate through on ancient routes, and your wilderness cabin is accessible only by snowshoe trek. Step outside at night into complete darkness and zero light pollution for the best northern lights conditions in Finland.
Activities
Snowshoeing
Trek through Finnish winter landscape where snowshoes let you float across deep powder. Love hiking? Snowshoeing is the winter version. Simply strap snowshoes onto your usual boots; the wide frame distributes your weight so you stay on top of the snow, rather than sinking into it.
Never tried winter sports? This needs zero technical skills - just your usual hiking fitness. You'll be moving through snowy forests without complicated techniques to master first.
What’s Included:
Snowshoes
Winter Boots
Trekking Poles
Cross Country Skiing
After mastering snowshoeing, step up to cross-country skiing where you'll glide across rolling terrain instead of just walking on it.
Cross-country skiing takes you over flatter, rolling (sometimes downhill) terrain. It has a much faster learning curve than downhill skiing; you'll make progress over just a couple of days (plus it's friendlier on the knees).
You need some balance and don't mind sliding around - expect to lose control a bit, that's part of the fun.
What’s Included:
Skis & Boots
Ski Poles
Experienced Instructors
Overnight Expedition
Hike deep into the wilderness and spend the night in an off-grid cabin. The remote location means no electricity - you'll keep warm with the log burning stove, eat by candlelight and enjoy the quiet (plus laughter every time someone has to bundle up for the outdoor bathroom).
There may not be running water, but there's a traditional wood-fired sauna. Fire it up after your active day, then plunge straight into the frozen lake if you're feeling brave.
What’s Included:
Sleeping bags and liners
Luggage transport to cabin
Fat Biking
Cycle through snowy forest on fat bikes that grip everything and let you cover serious ground fast.
No need to be a serious cyclist - just know how to ride a bike and stay balanced. You'll cruise forest trails while fat tires crunch through snow, picking up speed as you weave between trees.
What's included:
Fat bikes
Helmets
Local guides
Meet the Reindeer
Visit a local reindeer farm and get up close with these Arctic animals. Learn how they survive Finnish winters and feed them yourself.
Northern Lights
Seven nights in remote Finnish wilderness gives you multiple shots at spotting the aurora. Clear skies and zero light pollution create good conditions for sightings.
No guarantees - nature doesn't work on schedule - but you'll be checking the sky each evening hoping for that green glow to appear.
Saunas and Icebathing
Finns take saunas seriously - there are more saunas than cars in this country. Wood-fired saunas every evening to ease worked muscles after winter activities.
Take the frozen lake plunge - freeze your bits or keep them warm, either way you'll be entertained watching your fellow Gutsy Girls discover how quickly they can sprint back to the sauna while trying to maintain dignity.
Fitness and Experience Level
-
This trip is rated moderate. A good level of fitness is required to fully enjoy the activities, especially given the challenging snow conditions.
-
Duration: Expect active days of around 5 to 6 hours, including rest breaks. We maintain a relaxed pace with a long lunch break of 1 to 1.5 hours each day. The snow depth, often 60–70 cm, adds to the difficulty of our adventures.
Distance: We cover between 6 and 11 km daily. Snowshoeing and other activities in deep snow and cold conditions are more challenging than typical hiking or biking.
Consecutive Activity: This experience involves 6 consecutive days of physical activity, which is both demanding and incredibly rewarding!
Terrain: The terrain varies, with numerous short up and downhills but no long, steep climbs. We’ll explore diverse routes through dense forests, across frozen lakes, and along ridges.
Sub-Zero Living: For 1 night, we’ll stay in basic wilderness cabins without running water or electricity, relying on log-burning stoves for warmth.
-
This is for women who enjoy proper outdoor adventures and don't mind getting their heart rate up. No snowshoeing experience needed, but you must be able to ride a bike and be comfortable being active for a full day.
-
Duration: 5-6 hours active daily covering 6-11km with proper breaks. Don't underestimate it - 60-70cm snow depth makes everything harder work than regular hiking.
The reality: Varied terrain with short ups and downs through forests, frozen lakes, and ridges. 6 consecutive days of activity that'll test your legs.
Wilderness living: One night in basic wilderness cabins with no running water or electricity - just log-burning stoves for warmth.
Real talk: If you enjoy longer hikes, love being outdoors, and can handle basic wilderness conditions, you'll thrive. If you need creature comforts or struggle with sustained activity, choose something less demanding.
-
For six nights, you’ll stay in a welcoming cabin. This shared space offers a cosy, communal atmosphere, with shared bedrooms and bathrooms.
For one night, we’ll stay in rustic, off-grid cabins that offer a truly back-to-nature experience. Heated by wood stoves, with no electricity, you’ll have an authentic, peaceful experience. There’s a traditional wood-fired sauna, and we’ll wash sauna-style with water drawn from the well—no showers here!
-
Each day, we’ll enjoy a delicious and nutritious breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with a focus on Finnish products. Dietary requirements can be accommodated — let us know in advance.
