Activity Overview

Hiking

Trek through the contrasting landscapes of two national parks – from Rondane’s ancient ridges to Jotunheimen’s soaring peaks. Cover 12-20km daily across mountain terrain, navigating steep ascents up to 1100m elevation gain, scrambling over exposed ridges, and dealing with unpredictable weather.

Your expert guides teach essential skills while you hike, including proper use of poles, map reading, and scrambling techniques. Each day builds your abilities for the trip’s highlight: Besseggen Ridge.

  • Three days hiking
  • Scrambling sections and exposed ridges
  • Skills instruction from two mountain guides

Activity Overview

Besseggen Ridge

Tackle Norway’s most famous hike along a narrow mountain ridge with dramatic drops on both sides. Scramble across rocky sections where you’ll need hands and feet to navigate the terrain, all while being rewarded with panoramic views across Jotunheimen.

This challenging route demands a head for heights and solid scrambling skills. The views are worth the effort though.

Activity Overview

Scrambling

Use your hands and feet to navigate steep rocky sections where regular hiking becomes climbing without ropes. Move across exposed rock faces and negotiate boulder fields that require balance, coordination, and a steady head for heights.

Your guides teach hand and foot placement, safe movement techniques and how to test holds as you encounter these sections during your hikes.

Activity Overview

Yoga

Three yoga sessions to stretch out after long hiking days. Practice by the lake when weather permits, or in the hotel’s yoga studio when it doesn’t.

Never done yoga before? The sessions cater to all levels, focusing on gentle stretches that help your body recover from daily elevation gains and scrambling over rocky terrain.

Activity Overview

Sauna and Wild Swimming

Follow Norwegian tradition with sauna sessions and wild lake swimming (if you’re brave enough for mountain water that’ll wake every nerve ending!) Sleep comes very easy after days like these.

Challenging

Hiking 12–20km daily with elevation gains up to 1,100m on rocky, uneven terrain across three consecutive days is the main physical challenge here. Some sections involve scrambling where you’ll use both hands and feet, so a head for heights and confidence on steep ground matters alongside cardiovascular fitness. If you’re doing medium to high-intensity cardio three or more times a week and long mountain days suit you, you’re ready for this.

You'll Need to Be

  • Comfortable on steep, rocky terrain with a daypack across consecutive days
  • Okay with exposed ridges and scrambling sections
  • Fit enough to hike six to nine hours without stopping frequently on the uphills

Improver

You’ll need some hiking experience for this one. We’ve rated it Improver, so it can’t be your first time in the mountains. You should be comfortable on uneven terrain and have a head for heights before you come. Guides build on that, teaching pole technique, map reading and scrambling safety as you go. Good leg strength, endurance and a positive attitude toward challenging terrain matter just as much.

Not sure what level you are? Our Trip Rating Guide explains how we score fitness and skill.

The answers

What you're wondering

Do I need hiking experience?

Yes. We’ve rated this trip Improver, so it can’t be your first time in the mountains. You’ll need some hiking behind you and should be comfortable on uneven terrain with a head for heights before you come. Our guides build on that, teaching pole technique, map reading and scrambling basics as you go, each day building your confidence for the trip’s highlight: Besseggen Ridge.

What does challenging mean?

You’ll be active for up to nine hours daily, covering 12-20km across mountainous terrain with elevation gains up to 1100m. Expect rocky, uneven trails and scrambling sections. If you can handle consecutive active days and don’t mind getting sweaty, you’ll manage fine.

I'm nervous about heights - is Besseggen Ridge safe?

Besseggen involves scrambling with exposed sections that demand a head for heights. However, our guides know the route really well and will always put safety first. If the weather is bad, there’s an alternative hike that’s equally stunning without the height factor.

What hiking kit is provided?

We provide trekking poles, waterproof backpack covers, gaiters, and lunch boxes. You’ll need waterproof hiking boots (mandatory), a hardshell jacket, waterproof overtrousers, and a daypack. The full packing list covers everything from base layers to blister plasters.

What's the accommodation like?

We stay at a cosy family-run mountain hotel with spectacular views. There’s simple ensuite rooms, a lounge with an open fire, sauna, and direct lake access for wild swimming. It’s rustic charm with all the essentials after long days outdoors.

How do I get to the hotel?

Fly into Oslo Gardermoen (OSL), then take the train to Ringebu station, approximately 2.5 hours away. We’ll then meet you at Ringebu station and drive you to the hotel (a 20-minute transfer). Book tickets via vy.no/en or sj.no. Tickets go on sale 60–90 days before travel and cost approximately £30 each way and are not included in the trip price.

What time is the transfer?

Our transfer runs from Ringebu train station to your hotel on arrival and departure day. You are responsible for getting to Ringebu station – train tickets can be purchased 60-90 days in advance from vy.no/en.

Transfer timings:

  • Pickup: Ringebu train station to meet trains arriving at 16:53 or 18:49 (18:35 on Saturdays)
  • Drop-off: Ringebu station in time for the 12:06 or 13:57 trains

What's the weather like during summer?

Norwegian summers can be cool – pack as you would for crisp UK autumn. Mountain weather changes fast, so expect everything from sunshine to sudden showers. Temperatures vary and layering is essential. If weather prevents certain activities, we have alternative routes and backup plans ready.

Is the itinerary flexible?

Absolutely. Mountain weather can be unpredictable, so our guides adjust daily plans to ensure the best and safest experience. Everyone gets their adventure while staying safe.

Will there be other solo travellers?

Most of our guests come alone – that’s exactly what we’re here for. You’ll join a small group of like-minded friendly women aged 18-70+ who are ready for adventure. By day two, you’ll wonder why you were nervous about travelling solo.

Do I need extra cash?

Cards are accepted everywhere, so no need to bring Norwegian Krone. All meals, accommodation, and activities are included. You might want spending money for alcoholic and soft drinks at the hotel or any personal purchases.

Are the yoga classes suitable for beginners?

Yes, these sessions are designed to help you stretch out after long hiking days and the instructors will talk you through the positions. You’ll practice by the lake when weather permits, or in the hotel’s yoga studio when it doesn’t.

What happens if I can't keep up on the hikes?

The hikes build progressively to develop your skills and confidence, so no one gets left behind. We do ask that you show up ready for the hikes though.
