What to Expect

Join us this September for our standup paddleboarding and hiking adventure in Croatia. We’re heading to the Zadar Archipelago Islands and Velebit Mountains for a women only holiday filled with adventure!

This multi-centre holiday takes you off the tourist radar to discover remote Islands surrounded by crystal clear waters, lush landscapes and tranquil Mediterranean Islands in the sunshine, followed by hiking largest mountain range in Croatia for untouched and wild terrains.

Our multi-activity adventure is perfect combination of water and land based activities, exploring beautiful Islands by standup paddleboard, hiking to the peaks of the Velebit mountains and an afternoon of rock climbing for all levels.

We’ll start our week on the Island of Molat, with just over 200 permanent residents, this sleepy Island is the perfect base for those looking to reconnect with nature, slow down and immerse yourself in Island life.

For the first 4 days of our adventure we’ll civrcumnativage the Island, hoping between Islands and discovering hidden bays and beaches. Each day is a different adventure, we’ll sup between 6-20km per day, with plenty of breaks for swimming in the crystal clear waters, snorkelling and a couple of beach games and SUP games too.

We recommend you have some paddling experience prior to joining us in Croatia, our fantastic guide and instructor will give fantastic technique lessons throughout the trip to boost your skills and confidence!

We’ll be trekking through the diverse landscape of Velebit, one of the best preserved natural wilderness areas in south-eastern Europe. We’ll be exploring the Paklenica Nature Park, an area of outstanding beauty yet to be discovered by the masses due to it’s remote nature and lack of English written guide books.

Paklenica will serve as our base for our mountain adventure, we’ll hike from Starigrad to our mountain hut, setting down our bags allowing us to hike fast and light. Over the 2 and a half days in the mountains, we’ll explore the Paklenica Canyon and trek to the peaks of Velebit for incredible views and enjoy an afternoon of rock climbing.

We’ve teamed up with 4 fantastic climbing guides, to offer an afternoon of climbing for all levels. The Paklenica Gorge has hundreds of sport climbing routes, up to 30 metres high.

Over the course of 4 hours, we’ll climb up to 5 routes. This will be a great introduction to rock climbing for beginners and offer challenging routes for more experienced climbers!

Jump on the catamaran from Zadar Old Town to Molat at 13:30, your local guide and Gutsy Girl host will meet you at the Molat dock on your arrival.

After checking into your apartment, we’ll get on the water for our first SUP Session of the holiday! Our first water session we’ll focus on techniques with great coaching from our instructor. Working on paddling techniques to improve efficiency, learning new turning techniques and building your confidence on the board.

After our SUP we’ll have a short hike up to Straža, it’s a fantastic view point for us to show you where we’ll be exploring for the week and a beautiful spot for our first Island sunset.

Dinner will be hosted by a local family.

After a tasty breakfast sampling local jams and honey, we’ll cycle 9km across on the Island exploring villages along route to Zapuntel. From Zapuntel, we’ll paddle 3km on our first Island crossing to the Island Ist.

Here, we’ll hike (1h) to the highest point, reaching the Snow Lady Chapel to take in the views of the surround area and a great chance to see the Velebit mountain range we’ll be hiking in the week.

We’ll enjoy a delicious picnic lunch on the waters edge and have a chance to learn some traditional Croatian beach games.

In the afternoon we’ll paddle back to Molat and cycle back across the Island for dinner.

After breakfast, we’ll SUP to the peninsula of Bonastar, paddling through the dolphin research area, keeping our fingers crossed we’ll spot some!

We’ll paddle to the WW2 military caving system, exploring the huge tunnels used to store submarines, before paddling to a shipwreck for some incredible snorkelling opportunities. We’ll stop at the Veli Rat lighthouse for lunch, coffee and a swim in the crystal clean waters.

In the afternoon we’ll paddle back through Veli Rat lagoon, stopping for a break on Bršćak island before returning to Molat for dinner.

Midweek relaxed day to help us recharge, after a later breakfast we’ll spend the morning SUPing. We’ll circumnavigate Brgulje's little island (known for rabbits living there). We have a short walk and swim in Brgulje. We head back to Molat where late lunch is served in one of the family restaurants.

After lunch, you’ll have a free afternoon to relax on the nearby pebble beaches and explore the villages!

Dinner will be served in a local restaurant.

We’ll be up early morning to catch the ferry to Zadar at 6:50am, having our breakfast onboard and taking in the sites of the Islands we’ve been exploring by SUP.

In Zadar, we’ll stop at the local market to grab a few supplies for the mountains before our transfer to Starigrad town, the starting point of our hike. Our mountain hut and base for the next couple of days in a 2h hike through the Paklencia Canyon, we’ll hike up with our bags and set them down at the hut before heading for an afternoon of rock climbing.

We’ve partnered with fantastic local guides, who will split the group according to ability so everything has a challenging but fun climb for their experience.

Paklenica has over 100 sport climbing routes, reaching up to 30m high! All equipment, including shoes are provided, along with expert coaching to get the most from your afternoon of climbing.

Never climbed before? No problem, you’ll be in great company and you’ll have a great first taste of the sport with us!

After climbing, we’ll head back to our hut for dinner prepare by our guide.

After breakfast we’ll hike for 3-4 hours through the wild and varied terrain of the Velebit, passing through oak forest to the Struge Valley. Taking a break for lunch before we continue to the peaks of Velebit, aiming for Vaganjski Vrh, the highest of the mountain range with incredible views.

We’ll enjoy lunch, taking in the vistas and unspoilt beauty of the national park before heading back towards our mountain hut for dinner.

The hike will be around 14km / 1300m altitude and will take us 6-8 hours.

After breakfast, we’ll pack our bags and hike back down to Starigrad (7km) from there we’ll  transferred to Zadar - arriving there around 1pm. Your Gutsy Girls adventure will finish here, but we recommend a night in Zadar, a beautiful cobbled stoned town!

Private options are not available at the mountain huts, however after a long day hiking and climbing, you’ll be fast asleep in these comfy beds!

Our dinners are extra special as we work with local families and restaurants, who love to host our groups, serving up mountains of incredible food and a real opportunity to immerse yourself in Island life.

Each day we’ll be paddling up to 20km, some of these sessions we will be crossing between Islands so we recommend that you have some SUP experience before arriving. Conditions can be varied, so you may be paddling in choppy water and against wind. Luckily if you fall in the water is lovely and warm!

Just to be aware, that paddling into wind can be tiring, so you may choose to paddle on your knees, just something to consider if you have had an injury in the past.

We’ll have great coaching throughout the week to boost your skills and techniques, and there’s always the option to kayak on longer paddling days.

Gutsy Girls run twice monthly SUP Sessions in London where you can up your paddle fitness and technique to get the most from this trip, we can also recommend other SUP schools!

As with all our adventures, we recommend a good level of fitness. Our days are action packed with activities and the fitter you are, the more you’ll enjoy them :) We’ll always paddle as a group, no one is left behind!

As we are paddling in open water, we recommend being able to swim comfortably. We provide PFDs and leashes to stay safe when paddling.

Ferry Tickets - You can buy there 100m from where the boat departs, tickets cost around 10€, there’s no need to book in advance.

Make sure you have enough time to get to the Ferry from the airport!
