New to hiking but ready for a real adventure? Over four nights in Norway's Rondane National Park, you'll trade your usual routine for long days in the mountains, covering 13–15km of trail daily through open plateau, forest paths and river valleys with views that stretch out for miles ahead of you.
There’s no scrambling and no exposed ridges, just well-paced hiking through wild terrain, with 280–340m of elevation gain each day to keep it interesting. Back at the lodge there’s yoga sessions to stretch out after time on the trails, a sauna, (optional) wild swimming and incredible three-course dinners to round off the day.
Location
Our hiking playground for the week is the Rondane National Park. As Norway's oldest national park, it’s a proper wilderness, with towering peaks, crashing waterfalls, icy lakes and open meadows as far as you can see, all waiting for you to explore.
Located in the east of the country, the park’s landscape has routes for every level of hiker, from first-timers to those with a few serious mountains under their belt. And if the scenery doesn't stop you in your tracks, the wildlife might - Rondane is home to one of Norway's last wild reindeer herds, plus moose, ptarmigan and other mountain animals.
Activities
Hiking
Three days of hiking through Rondane National Park - Norway's oldest and (in our opinion) finest park. Each day covers 13-15km treks on different terrain, from open plateau and forest trails to river valleys with views that stretch for miles. The routes also have 280–340m of elevation gain per day, making this trip a great foundation for those wanting to take their first steps in mountain hiking.
Your local guides know these mountains well. As you move through the park they'll cover the things that really make a difference when you’re on the trail, including pole technique, pacing and how to read the terrain ahead.
Three days hiking: 14km, 15km and 13km routes
280–340m elevation gain each day
Varied mountain terrain, but with no scrambling or technical sections
Skills instruction from expert local guides throughout
Yoga
To ease achy muscles, stretch it all out during the week with three yoga sessions. Each class focuses on recovery and mobility, working through exactly what your body needs after a full day on the trail. Practice by the lake when the weather plays along, or in the hotel's yoga studio when it doesn't.
Never done yoga before? That's fine - the sessions work for all levels and all bodies. Just turn up and follow the instructor - your legs will thank you in the morning.
Sauna and Wild Swimming
Follow Norwegian tradition with sauna sessions and wild lake swimming (if you're brave enough for mountain water that'll wake every nerve ending!)
Fitness and Experience Level
-
Although this trip is designed as an introduction to mountain hiking, fitness is key to get the most out of this adventure. You’ll need good endurance, power in the legs for long days on the trails and a positive attitude towards a challenge!
Trip Difficulty: We've rated this trip as moderate, considering the terrain, distances, and elevation. This trip will be perfect for anyone with an active lifestyle who wants to upgrade their local walks and running routes for fresh Norwegian air and rocky mountain paths.
-
Distance: 13–15km per day across three hiking days.
Elevation: 280–340m of ascent each day - steady climbs on well-marked trails, nothing technical, but endurance is needed.
Terrain: Open plateau, forest trails and mountain paths. No scrambling, no exposed ridges.
Consecutive days: Three full days of activity back to back - hiking, yoga and optional wild swimming.
Weather: Norwegian summers are beautiful, but unpredictable, so come prepared for sun and rain. Layers, waterproofs and a good attitude go a long way.
-
This trip is built for active women who are new to mountain hiking or getting back into it after a break. You don't need any prior experience on mountain trails, just good base of fitness and the willingness to push yourself a little. If you're used to walking, running, cycling or any regular exercise, you're ready for this.
-
You'll stay at a family-run mountain hotel with views that stretch for miles from every window. It's cosy, with a communal lounge, yoga studio, sauna, and a lake cold enough to shock your system if you're up for wild swimming. Rooms are rustic with everything you need for a good night’s sleep after a day in the mountains.
-
Expect hearty Norwegian food designed to fuel active days. The day starts with a well stocked buffet, lunch is packed to eat out on the trails, whilst dinner is a set menu of three delicious courses each night. We cater for all dietary requirements, just let us know what you need.
