Fly into Zaragoza, Spain

July - September

The Spanish Pyrenees are criminally underrated. While everyone flocks to the French side, you'll have UNESCO wilderness and dramatic canyon trails mostly to yourself. Four consecutive days of serious mountain walking - 18km hikes with 750m elevation gains that'll test your legs.

Each day brings different terrain: ancient shepherd paths, scrambles to glacial lakes, and ridge walks where you'll learn essential alpine skills. Pole technique, map reading, moving safely when the weather turns - your local guide covers it all.

Base yourself in Biescas village with a spa in the hotel for recovery. Small group, expert guides, everything sorted. Just bring your determination.

Location

The Spanish Pyrenees - fewer crowds, wilder trails

The Pyrenees stretch nearly 500km between Spain and France, but the Spanish side gets way less attention. While everyone heads to the French Alps, you'll have these dramatic mountain trails and challenging day hikes largely to yourselves.

Ordesa National Park - UNESCO hiking paradise Spain's oldest national park, established in 1918, protects serious mountain terrain. Monte Perdido towers at 3,355 metres whilst Bearded Vultures soar over canyon edge trails and Pyrenean chamois navigate cliff faces that'll make your head spin.

Hiking

Trek through UNESCO wilderness - glacier-carved canyons, alpine meadows, mountain peaks. You'll cover up to 18km daily across exposed ridges, ancient woodlands and canyon paths, with ascents hitting 750m elevation gain. Rocky trails, mountain weather that flips from sun to storms - this is the real deal.

Your local guide teaches alpine skills as you go: pole technique, map reading, moving confidently on exposed ground. Four consecutive days of serious mountain challenges that'll build your abilities with each hike.

Includes:

  • Local mountain guide

  • Navigation skills training

Valle de Tena

Trekking through glacial valleys

The Tena Valley cuts deep into the Spanish Pyrenees, creating glacial cirques and hanging valleys perfect for day adventures. From your Biescas base, shepherds' paths lead to mountain lakes, canyon ledges, and summit views - all doable as daily challenges.

Ibóns

Glacial lakes worth the climb

These high-altitude lakes formed 12,000 years ago and reward tough uphill slogs with mountain reflections and alpine scenery. Water temperatures rarely hit 15°C even in August.

Biescas village

Aragonese mountain life

Your base maintains authentic Aragonese character with family-run restaurants serving hearty mountain fare and local specialties. Thermal springs bubble up from the ground for post-adventure soaks in the hotel spa, while traditional bars stay open late for evening wine and conversation with locals.

Activities

Fitness and Experience Level

  • We've rated this trip moderate to challenging. You don't need to be an experienced hiker, but you will need good endurance, solid cardio fitness and leg power for climbing uphill. Plus a positive attitude towards challenges.

  • Duration: Up to nine hours of hiking on the more challenging days, including breaks. These take you through remote, wild mountain landscapes.

Distance: Hikes cover 12km, 14km, and up to 18km. Make sure you're prepared to tackle these distances in mountainous terrain.

Elevation: Ascents reach up to 750 vertical metres. You'll need to be comfortable both going up and coming down. Poles are on standby to help.

Terrain: Rocky, uneven trails that add intensity to each hike.

Heights: Some exposed areas and viewpoints - a reasonable comfort level with heights is necessary.

Consecutive Days: Four days of hiking back-to-back. This demands stamina and physical endurance.

Weather: Mountain weather changes fast. Come prepared with clothing for various conditions, including rain and low temperatures at altitude, as well as bright sunshine.

  • Your base for the week is a four-star hotel in Biescas village, positioned for easy mountain access. Indoor and outdoor pools, sauna, peaceful gardens - everything you need for post-hike recovery. Rooms are stylish and comfortable for decent sleep.

  • Buffet breakfasts and packed lunches fuel your days with hearty, wholesome ingredients. Evenings mean traditional Pyrenean cuisine at carefully chosen local restaurants - fresh, seasonal mountain fare that actually tastes good. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming without any fuss, just good food, comfortable surroundings, and everything you need to recharge between hiking days.

Let us know dietary requirements in advance and we'll sort it. Vegetarians and vegans will find their choices very limited.
