Fitness and Experience Level

  • This trip is designed for intermediate to advanced hikers ready to take on a hut-to-hut challenge in one of Europe's great mountain ranges. A solid level of fitness is non-negotiable, but you don’t need experience - just confidence on rocky, uneven paths and exposed ridgelines. There are also a couple of short sections where you'll need to scramble. Come prepared, and this week will deliver. Don’t forget that on the hut-to-hut section of the trip you’ll need to carry your own overnight kit so pack light and potentially train wearing your backpack.

  • Duration: Full hiking days spending approx 5-7 hours on your feet. The refugio stay days are the biggest as you’ll also be carrying all your overnight stuff. Plan accordingly.

Distance: Between 9.5km and 14km per day. The distances aren't huge, but the terrain makes every kilometre count.

Elevation: Daily ascents range from 400m to 1,250m. Two optional summits push above 2,600m and 2,800m. You’ll know about these climbs, and some sections are really steep.

Terrain: Rough underfoot for most of the week. Expect boulderfields, loose rock on the higher cols, and a couple of short sections where you'll need to scramble. Good ankle support in your boots is essential.

Heights: Most of the trip is above 2,000m. Even in summer it can be really cold up high and the weather can change fast. If heights aren't your thing, it's worth sitting with that before you book.

Consecutive Days: Four days of back-to-back alpine hiking, with three days carrying your kit and two nights spent in mixed dorm mountain refugios. Your legs need to be able to keep going when they'd rather not.

Weather: Mountain weather moves quickly and the higher routes are exposed. Your guide will make a call on the route for safety, but there’s options, don’t worry.

Fitness: You need a solid base. If you can handle long, consecutive days with significant ascent, you'll be well-placed. If your training so far has been the odd weekend walk, give yourself more time to build up before you arrive.

  • Real summits, big skies and terrain that really tests you. You’ll spend five to seven hours on your feet most days, with two optional summit pushes above 2,600m and 2,800m, and four consecutive days of back-to-back alpine hiking with no rest day in between.

  • For three nights you’ll stay at a comfortable hotel in Biescas with indoor and outdoor pools, a sauna and gardens. Single and twin rooms are available. On the trail, you’ll have two nights sleeping in dormitory-style rooms in remote mountain refugios, both with hot showers, a bar and evening meals included. Please note that dorm rooms are mixed gender and may be shared with others staying in the mountain hut - these places are in high demand in the summer!

  • All meals are included throughout the trip. In Biescas, breakfast is at your hotel, lunch is packed to be eaten on the trails and dinners are at local village restaurants. During your hut-to-hut hike the refugios will keep you well fed. It’s nothing fancy, but it’s filling and perfect for refueling.

If you have dietary requirements, let us know early so we can plan ahead with the huts. Vegetarian meals are available at both refugios if flagged in advance, but options may be limited. However, unfortunately we can’t cater for vegans on this trip.
