Fly into Verona, Italy
July
Try five different activities across seven days in one of the most dramatic corners of the Italian Alps. Every morning brings another new adventure, from hikes through ancient waterfalls and past centuries-old larch trees one day, to a via ferrata trail that follows where World War 1 soldiers marched the next. Add to that river rafting and an eBike ride through lake side forest tracks and you’ve got yourself a trip as packed with variety as it is with adventure!
Each day we’ll also head to a different mountain area with expert local guides who know the landscape inside out, before heading back to our family run hotel in the evenings. Our home of the week is clean and comfy, with incredible four-course dinners and a small wellness centre to help ease any achy muscles.
Location
Val di Sole runs through the heart of Trentino province in Italy. It’s flanked by three of the Alps' most striking mountain groups and the kind of valley that serious outdoor people know about. With the Stelvio National Park on the doorstep, the Noce River carving through the valley floor, and the Brenta Dolomites rising up to the south, it’s the perfect playground for anyone looking for a mountain adventure.
The base for the week is a basic family-run hotel tucked in the valley, close to civilization, but far enough from the tourist trail to feel like you’re exploring completely new territory.
Hiking
It’s no secret that the Dolomites is a hiker’s paradise. However, where certain sections involve crowds and queues, we’ll take you off the beaten path for two hikes through ancient forests, past towering spires and along rocky gorges.
One hike drops you into the heart of Stelvio National Park for a forest hike past crashing waterfalls and larch trees that have stood in place for centuries. Your second takes you through dramatic landscapes dominated by towering rock walls and spires, and past historic mountain refugios, all with views for days.
Via Ferrata
Follow over 50 m of suspended walkways, tunnels blasted through rock, granite staircases and wooden paths, tracing a route used by the Italian army during World War 1 to move between ridgelines. As well as the adrenaline that comes with navigating a Via Ferrata at around 3000m above sea level, this route is also soaked in history, nature and incredible landscapes.
Rafting
Get the heart rate up and the adrenaline pumping with a rafting trip down the Noce river, one of Italy’s most respected white water routes. After a proper safety briefing and talk about paddle technique, you’ll hit the river to pass unspoiled alpine scenery before tackling stretches of rapids.
eBiking
Explore the scenery on two wheels with a 35km ride through a valley, into the mountains and around alpine lakes on eBikes. Although you do still need to peddle, change gear and negotiate different terrains, eBikes help add a bit of extra power when you need it most, leaving you free to enjoy the views.
Activities
Fitness and Experience Level
-
This trip is rated moderate.
You'll be moving your body every single day across varied mountain terrain and in various ways that use very different muscle groups. You don't need to be an elite athlete, but you do need to show up in good shape, ready to tackle a new activity and potentially challenging terrain each day. All activities are beginner friendly, so if you’ve ever wanted to give something a go, now's your chance!
-
Duration: Expect 4-6 hours of activity per day. There will be time for breaks and lunch, but you’ll be moving and outdoors the whole time. The weather may also be hot, even in the mountains.
Terrain: Forest trails, rocky ridgelines, alpine pastures, and river bank paths - the terrain changes throughout the week.
Heights: The via ferrata runs at around 3,000m above sea level with exposed sections. A genuine head for heights is essential.
Consecutive activity: Your trip will be back to back active days. Come prepared and you'll make the most of every one of them.
-
If you regularly hike, run, cycle, or do any kind of cardio, you're in the right territory. The via ferrata is the most physically demanding day, the rafting is the wildcard. Come ready to be active and get stuck in and you'll love every bit of it.
-
A basic but comfortable three star hotel in a small village, with well appointed rooms, a small wellness area for post-activity recovery, a restaurant, bar, terrace and reliable wifi. There’s not many frills, but it's a solid base that offers everything you need after a day in the mountains. Good beds, friendly staff, great views.
-
The food here is great. The hotel restaurant leans into regional Trentino cooking; hearty, well-made, and built around local produce. You’ll start the day with a buffet breakfast, followed by a packed lunch which you’ll eat whilst out on the trails. Dinner is a four-course meal, served at the hotel each evening.
All dietary requirements are catered for, but you need to let us know when you book. Options for vegans and vegetarians may be much more limited than you’re used to.
