1 Night in Zadar: What to do before or after your Paddleboarding Holiday in Croatia

What to Do and See in Zadar

Croatia's coastline boasts many stunning towns, but Zadar stands out with its rich cultural history, breathtaking Adriatic views, and a vibrantly energetic local scene. Whether you're joining our paddleboarding adventure or simply craving a sun-kissed escape, even a single night in Zadar adds another dimension to your Croatian adventure. Here’s why Zadar is not just a stopover, but has the potential to be a highlight of your trip.

Historical Marvels

Immerse yourself in Zadar's rich history, etched into every corner of its ancient walls and charming alleyways. Explore the Roman Forum, one of the largest and best-preserved in the region, dating back to the 1st century BC. For panoramic views, climb the 180 steps of St. Anastasia's Cathedral Bell Tower. The stunning vista is worth the effort (and the €3 entrance fee).

Culinary Delights to Savour

Zadar's cuisine is a symphony of Mediterranean flavors. Indulge in fresh seafood, rich olive oils, and local wines at a traditional Croatian tavern, known as a 'konoba'. Sample dishes like freshly grilled fish drizzled with local olive oil, and don't miss a glass of Maraschino, a unique cherry liqueur that originated right here in Zadar.

For a unique dining experience, Gutsy Girls recommends The Botanist—a great vegan restaurant with a delicious menu that appeals to all, not just vegans. And for dessert? Head to Gelateria Eva, our favourite spot for top-notch ice cream.

Listen to the sea organ

Experience the architectural marvel of the Sea Organ, designed by Croatian architect Nikola Bašić. This unique installation, built into the seaside steps, serenades you with music generated by the sea waves. Opened in 2005, it perfectly encapsulates Zadar's innovative spirit and profound connection to the sea. Right next to it, the Greetings to the Sun, a mesmerising artwork of 300 multi-layered glass plates, collects solar energy by day and creates a stunning light show at night. This visual spectacle, mimicking the solar system, complements the auditory experience of the Sea Organ.

Travelling solo

Even as a solo traveller, Zadar puts your worries at ease. This friendly city boasts a low crime rate and welcoming locals, making it a haven for independent explorers. Wander the enchanting streets and historical sites at your own pace, soaking in the atmosphere. Savour delicious local cuisine at a bustling konoba, or stroll along the Riva promenade at night – Zadar offers a safe and relaxing environment to enjoy your solo adventure.

The best part? You won't be entirely alone! Through our Whatsapp group, you'll be connected with other travellers on your trip, opening the door to spontaneous adventures and shared experiences. Explore Zadar together, or simply enjoy the comfort of knowing there are friendly faces nearby.

Plitvice Lakes

If you have an extra day, venture beyond Zadar's charm and immerse yourself in the breathtaking beauty of Plitvice Lakes National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Renowned for its 16 cascading lakes, interconnected by waterfalls that tumble into a dramatic limestone canyon, this natural wonder is a must-see for any nature enthusiast.

Explore the park at your own pace, wandering along the extensive network of wooden walkways and hiking trails that weave through the lush landscape. For a unique perspective, take a scenic electric boat ride and soak in the panoramic views of the cascading waters.

Krka

Alternatively, Krka National Park offers a slightly closer but equally awe-inspiring experience. About an hour and a half from Zadar by bus, Krka is famous for its series of seven beautiful waterfalls, including the spectacular Skradinski Buk, one of Croatia’s most famous sights. The park features a network of trails and boardwalks that allow visitors to explore its scenic waterways and discover hidden pools ideal for swimming. Don’t miss the chance to take a refreshing dip in the clear waters below the waterfalls—a unique opportunity that Krka offers, unlike Plitvice Lakes!

Paddleboarding Paradise Awaits in the Zadar Archipelago!

Croatia Island-Hopping adventure

Get ready to explore the stunning Zadar Archipelago, the densest island group in the Mediterranean, on your upcoming paddleboarding adventure. Your tranquil base will be Molat Island, a haven of peace covering only 23 square kilometers. Imagine a laid-back, slow-paced island virtually traffic-free – with more fishing boats than cars – where everything is within walking distance. You won't want to leave!

Getting to Molat

The nearest airport to Molat is in Zadar. From there, it's a quick and easy 20-minute taxi ride or a 30-minute local bus journey to Zadar's charming old town. A daily catamaran departs Zadar for Molat every Saturday and Wednesday at 14:05, taking just one hour for the scenic voyage. On your last day, catch the early morning catamaran back to Zadar, arriving at 07:50.

Flights

Low-cost flights to Zadar are readily available from various UK airports, including London, Leeds, Birmingham, Newcastle, and Bournemouth.

Our paddleboarding adventure spans six nights, so you might find it necessary to spend an additional night in Zadar at the beginning or end of your trip, depending on your flight schedule. As you'll have discovered above, Zadar is a wonderful city to explore for an overnight stay!

Accommodation in Zadar:

Where to Stay: We encourage using the WhatsApp group to coordinate room or apartment sharing in Zadar. The Old Town is an ideal location for accommodation, offering proximity to excellent restaurants, attractions, and the departure point for your catamaran.

Budget Options: Many guests choose the Downtown Boutique Hostel, where a 6-bed female dormitory costs about £39 per night. The hostel is quiet and offers late self-check-in at no extra charge. Private rooms are available for approximately £93.

Mid-Range and Above: Explore various options on Booking.com and Airbnb. Depending on the season, private rooms range from £60 to £120+. Staying within the Old Town is recommended, as this is where the boat departs and where you'll likely want to explore before boarding.

Cross Country Skiing vs. Snowshoeing: Which Winter Adventure Suits You?

Winter is calling with its pristine snow-covered landscapes, and what better way to explore them than through cross-country skiing or snowshoeing? Both activities are excellent for beginners with no previous snow sports experience!

Cross Country Skiing

What is Cross-country skiing?

Cross-country skiing is similar to hiking or running but on skis! It's an active, dynamic experience that captivates with its rhythmic glide over snowy landscapes. Though it requires learning a new skill, many find it easy to pick up. Expect a stimulating blend of balance, coordination, and the thrilling sensation of sliding across the snow.

At Gutsy Girls, we specialise in the classic and backcountry styles of cross-country skiing, as they are ideal for beginners seeking snowy adventures. Our programs are designed for easy learning, offering a range of adventures and retreats in beautiful snow-filled landscapes whether it's gliding on groomed trails or exploring off-path wilderness!

Why Choose Cross-Country Skiing?

  • Skill Development: Though it involves a learning curve, acquiring the technique is part of the fun. Most beginners feel comfortable after a day or two.

  • Exhilaration: For those who enjoy the rush of speed, cross-country skiing offers the thrill of gliding down gentle slopes.

  • Progressive Challenges: From groomed trails to adventurous backcountry expeditions, there's always a new terrain to conquer.

  • For the Active Adventurer: Perfect for those seeking a blend of physical activity, exploration, and nature connection.

SNOWSHOEING

What is Snowshoeing?

Snowshoeing is the winter walker's dream. By strapping on snowshoes, you distribute your weight evenly, allowing for easy movement across deep snow. It's simple, intuitive, and requires no prior skill, making it an ideal choice for all experience levels.

  • Simple and Intuitive: Step in and start exploring without any learning curve.

  • Access to Majestic Views: Reach high peaks and experience the awe-inspiring beauty of nature.

  • Untouched Wilderness: Ideal for venturing into serene, unexplored snowy realms.

  • Nature Connection: Immerse yourself fully in the peacefulness and splendour of the winter world.

Your Winter Adventure Awaits

Whether it's the active rhythm of cross-country skiing or the tranquil exploration of snowshoeing, both sports offer a unique way to enjoy the winter wonderland. Gear up, step into the snow, and discover which winter sport resonates with your adventurous spirit!
