March

Longyearbyen, Spitsbergen Island

Crawl through glacial ice caves, mush husky teams, and snowmobile across frozen riverbeds on this six-day multi-activity Arctic expedition, based in the world's northernmost settlement. Hike to epic viewpoints, visit the Global Seed Vault, and experience a silence that only exists in the Arctic.

Each day brings different activities across landscapes so vast they feel like another planet. From underground glacier tunnels where you squeeze through narrow passages, to dog sledding with teams bred for Arctic conditions and full-day snowmobile expeditions to reach remote valleys. This is Arctic exploration with variety.

Stay at a comfortable guesthouse with hot showers that you’ll appreciate even more after freezing days outdoors. Restaurant dinners featuring local Arctic ingredients, small groups, and the kind of multi-activity week that gives you a real taste of polar life.

Location

The world's northernmost settlement, Longyearbyen sits closer to the North Pole than to Oslo. Population 2,500, polar bear warning signs at every exit, and a law requiring rifles outside town limits (thanks to those said polar bears).

Svalbard Wilderness

The wilderness starts where Longyearbyen ends. Massive glaciers flow down to frozen coastlines and rivers freeze solid enough to drive snowmobiles across. Wildlife such as polar bears, Arctic foxes and reindeer survive in conditions that reach -25°C. This is where remote actually means something. From mid-November until late January the sun barely rises, casting the whole place into polar night.

Ice Cave Exploration

Strap on spikes and head torches for an expedition into Svalbard's ice caves. Navigate uneven ice surfaces, squeeze through narrow passages, and emerge into chambers where the ceiling disappears into darkness. Some sections require crawling so this isn’t suitable for anyone with severe claustrophobia or back problems.  The exploration is also part of a day hike, walking approx. 5km each way with altitude gains of 500m or more.

Included:

  • Photos to make your friends envious

  • Expert cave guides

Glacier Viewpoint Hikes

Trek to summit viewpoints for views across Svalbard's frozen landscape. Hike rugged terrain with significant elevation gain, and see how glaciers have carved the entire archipelago. If the snow is deep you’ll do this in snowshoes!

Included:

  • Expert wilderness guides

  • Views for days

Dog Sledding

Learn to mush husky teams across Svalbard's snow and ice. You'll handle the dogs, bark commands, and help navigate as the sleds move fast across Arctic terrain. These are working animals bred for this, and their energy is infectious.

Included:

  • Experienced husky guides

  • Learn to mush a team of huskies

Snowmobile Arctic Expedition

Drive your own snowmobile across Svalbard's Arctic wilderness. This is a full-day of expedition-style snowmobiling across changing terrain, frozen rivers, mountain valleys, and landscapes so remote they feel like you’ve been dropped on another planet. When visibility is good, you'll stop for lunch in settings that redefine isolation.

You’ll cover distances impossible to reach on foot. No snowmobile experience needed, but you must have a valid driver's license. We recommend everyone drives their own snowmobile, being a passenger is cold work, and you'll want the adrenaline kick that comes from being in control.

Included:

  • Guide with safety equipment

  • Search and rescue insurance included

Activities

  • Winter conditions in the Arctic don't compromise. You'll face genuine cold, navigate icy terrain with heavy gear, and stay active for long days. Daily activities last 4-8 hours in temperatures that can reach -25°C.

  • The reality:

You'll hike on uneven terrain, crawl through ice caves, and handle eager sled dogs. Your gear will be heavier than summer hiking, and the cold affects both your tech and your own battery life. And it will be really, really cold.

You need solid cardiovascular fitness and mental resilience for consecutive days of Arctic activity.

    Difficulty level:

This trip is rated challenging. You’ll cover long distances over long days in sub zero conditions. We recommend doing regular cardio 3 times per week: running, cycling, or high-intensity classes, anything that gets your heart rate up for 45+ minutes. You also need to be able to walk on uneven terrain at 500m altitude, so practice hikes uphill or even setting your treadmill at a high angle for a session will help to prep.

You also need good resilience - your face will freeze, your equipment might not work as expected, and the landscape can feel overwhelmingly vast. Remember, discomfort is temporary but memories are forever!

  • This will suit adventurous women who can face a challenge, but still want to sleep in a proper bed at night. If you’re craving an arctic action adventure in one of the world’s most northerly locations and have the fitness and endurance to match, then this is for you.

  • Your base in Longyearbyen offers vital basic comfort. Think cosy rooms with shared facilities, reliable hot showers (essential after sub-zero days), and hearty breakfasts to fuel morning adventures. A 30 minute walk from the town centre, this isn't luxury accommodation. It's practical, comfortable, and perfect for Arctic adventures.

  • All meals are included and designed to fuel active days in extreme cold. From filling breakfasts at the guesthouse to lunches often eaten outdoors in “pinch-me” locations. Dinners showcase local Arctic meals to warm you up after long cold days; Reindeer stew, warming soups, and hearty pasta dishes.

We accommodate most dietary requirements with advance notice, but tell us early as sourcing specialty ingredients in Svalbard requires planning. Please check with our Booking Team before booking to ensure we can cater for your dietary requirement.
