Fly into Ljubljana, Slovenia

August

Six days of progressive SUP across three of Slovenia's most distinct regions — starting on the glacier lakes of the Julian Alps, moving to the Soča Valley's rivers, and finishing in the Vipava wine region with a day of canyoning thrown in.

This is the trip for paddlers who want to actually improve. You'll build from flatwater to moving water across the week, with local guides who know these waterways properly. Hiking, good food, a farm stay, and a day in a canyon for good measure.

Location

Six days across three of Slovenia's most distinct regions — glacier lakes in the Julian Alps, the Soča river, and the vineyard-covered Vipava Valley. Local guides who actually know this country take you through all of it.

Activities

Paddleboarding

This trip is for paddlers who've been on a board before and want to push further. Five days on the water, building progressively — flatwater on Lake Bled and Bohinj to start, then moving water, then rapids on the Soča. By the end of the week, you'll be navigating whitewater that would have looked intimidating on day one.

What is Whitewater SUP?

Whitewater SUP takes everything you know about flatwater paddling and adds moving water, currents, and rapids. You're still standing on a board with a paddle — but reading the river, picking your line, and staying upright when the water pushes back are a different skill set entirely.

This trip is an introduction to that. We work on smaller rapids, building your ability to read water and react to it before the river demands it. You don't need whitewater experience — but you do need to be solid on a flatwater board, comfortable falling in, and up for learning something that'll take a few goes to click.

Required SUP Skills for Joining

• You’ve paddled at least five times, with at least 10 hours on a SUP.

• You’ve paddled at least 10 km over a day (with breaks!)

• You’re comfortable with standing on the board for several hours at a time.

• You can self-rescue and are comfortable with falling in the water.

• You’re able to swim 100 metres in open water.

• You have a good-to-high fitness level, are regularly active and a have a positive attitude towards challenge.

Canyoning

Canyoning is exactly what it sounds like — getting through a canyon using whatever it takes. Hiking, swimming, scrambling, abseiling, and jumping into pools you probably wouldn't approach if you could see them first. It's a half-day that covers a lot of ground and uses your whole body.

No experience needed, but you will need a reasonable head for heights and the willingness to commit when you're standing at the edge.

Hiking

When we're off the water, we're on foot. The hiking routes take you to waterfalls and natural swimming spots that don't make it onto most maps — after a few hours on the trails, getting in is non-negotiable.

Triglav National Park

We start in Triglav National Park, based in Ribčev Laz for the first two nights. Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj are both on the doorstep — two days on the water, plus a day of canyoning in the park before we move on.

Vipava Valley

Day three, we take the car train through to the Vipava Valley — one of Slovenia's lesser-known wine regions, and one that deserves more attention. The afternoon is built around a visit to a local winemaker: how the wines are made, what makes this region distinct, and plenty of tasting.

Soča Valley

The last stretch is the Soča Valley, based in Kobarid for the final nights. The river is the reason people come here — it runs an impossible shade of green through canyon walls, and it delivers on both flatwater and whitewater. You'll paddle both across the final days, finishing on the rapids. After a week of building to this, you'll be ready for it.

Kobarid is a proper mountain town. Good bars, good food, the kind of place where you'll want to stay longer than you do.
