Fly into Ljubljana, Slovenia

June to September

Six days in Slovenia this summer — SUP-ing glacier-fed lakes and emerald rivers, hiking the Julian Alps, and eating extremely well along the way.

No paddleboarding experience? No problem. From day one, you'll be on the water at Lake Bled, one of Europe's most iconic spots, with an expert SUP instructor coaching you up to speed. You won't be doing lengths in a pool — you'll be learning on one of the most beautiful lakes on the continent, alpine peaks all around.

Once you've got your balance (and you will), the rivers are next. The Soča runs an impossible shade of green through mountain gorges — it's the kind of scenery that makes you stop mid-paddle, which is fine, because you'll have plenty of time. Our local guides know these waterways inside out and bring the history, culture, and food along for the ride. Slovenia's wine and food scene is seriously underrated, and you'll leave with opinions on both.

Active days, great food, small group, zero faff. That's the plan.

Location

Six days, three regions, and a detour into Italy — this trip covers serious ground without rushing past the good bits.

You'll move through Slovenia's most distinct landscapes: the Julian Alps, the emerald-green rivers of the Soča Valley, and a day across the border in Trieste. On the water and on foot, guided by locals who know exactly where to take you and why.

Locations

Stand Up Paddleboarding

This trip is built around learning to paddleboard — and doing it in one of the best places on the planet for it. Our SUP instructors work with complete beginners and those with a little experience, getting you confident and capable on the water across five days of progressive coaching.

You'll be covering 5–9km per day, with sessions of 3–5 hours. There are stops built in — for swimming, photos, and just taking in where you are — but this is an active trip and you'll know about it by the end of each day.

Stronger paddlers are welcome, but the pace is set for beginners. If you're already comfortable on a board and want more of a challenge, our Slovenia Whitewater SUP Adventure is the one to look at.

Hiking

Two days of hiking, both worth lacing up for. The first takes you up through the Julian Alps — a solid climb through alpine forest that earns you a viewpoint over Lake Bohinj and lunch at a mountain hut.

The second heads off the main trails to waterfalls and natural swimming spots that most visitors never find. After a few hours in the heat, jumping in isn't optional.

Triglav National Park

We start in Triglav National Park — Lake Bled, Lake Bohinj, Julian Alps as the backdrop. Two nights here, with time on both lakes and a day heading up into the mountains. It's one of the best places in Europe to get on a paddleboard for the first time, and you'll see why the moment you're on the water.

Soča Valley

Then it's on to the Soča Valley for three nights. The river runs an extraordinary shade of green through steep canyon walls — it's the kind of place that looks like someone's edited the photos, but hasn't. Three days of paddling and hiking, with the valley doing most of the talking.

Vipava Valley

The last stop is the Vipava Valley — Karst mountains on one side, vineyards on the other. After a day paddling across the border in Trieste, we finish here with a visit to a local wine cellar, learning about the region's grape varieties before getting to the important part: tasting them.

Fitness and Experience Level

  • This trip is rated moderate. While it’s for anyone new to paddleboarding, it’s still an active holiday. You’ll be moving for 4-6 hours each day, exploring all the incredible scenery Slovenia has to offer, so a reasonable level of fitness will help you get the most out of the experience.

  • Activity Duration: 4-6 hours of movement each day

SUP Distances: 5km to 9km per session

SUP Duration: 3-4 hours on the water, with breaks

Hiking: Our hikes will vary from 5km to 8km. We’ll hike for up to 5 hours on mountainous terrain.

Hiking Terrain: Navigate uneven, rocky paths with loose stones underfoot. Ascents up to 550m.

Consecutive Activity: Prepare for five days of back-to-back activities, which can be demanding.

Weather: Warm summer temperatures with plenty of sun exposure.

  • Absolutely! No SUP experience is needed -our expert guides will teach you the ropes. If you’re keen to try something new and embrace adventure, this trip is for you.

  • Two bases, both worth the stay. We start with two nights at a 4-star hotel in Ribčev Laz — right on Lake Bled, with everything you need after a full day on the water. Then we move to an agroturismo farm in the Soča Valley: think home-cooked food, outdoor pool, and the kind of views that make you linger over breakfast.

  • Slovenia takes food seriously — it was named European Region of Gastronomy in 2021, and with 24 distinct food regions and exceptional local produce, it earns it. Expect restaurant meals, farm-to-table dinners at the agroturismo, and a dedicated evening of wine tasting and local food.

Dietary requirements: Slovenia's food scene is meat and dairy-heavy. Vegan and gluten-free options are genuinely limited here, so if that's you, get in touch before booking and we'll be straight with you about what's workable.
