If you’ve been craving a winter adventure that pushes you — physically, mentally, and far beyond the usual — this is it.
Join us in Lemmenjoki National Park for a backcountry cross-country ski expedition through one of Europe’s wildest landscapes. Over seven days, you’ll ski up to 17 km a day through deep snow, pull a fully loaded pulka (sled), and sleep in off-grid wilderness cabins. No electricity, no running water — just saunas, firewood, and snow melted for your meals.
This expedition is built for women who are new to expedition life but ready to throw themselves in. You don’t need prior ski or expedition experience — we’ll teach you what you need to know. What you do need is a high level of fitness, good balance, and the mindset to keep going when the weather turns or the trail gets long.
It’s tough. It’s remote. And it’s exactly the kind of trip that reminds you what you’re capable of. You’ll be out there with a group of women who are up for the same challenge — prepared to dig deep, get stuck in, and back each other every step of the way.
Location
We’ll be heading into Lemmenjoki National Park, which at 2,850 square kilometres, is Finland's largest, most northerly national park.
Located at 69 degrees north, at the top of Finland and on the border of Norway, the old-growth, boreal forests of Lemmenjoki offer a great environment for remote trail-less ski touring adventures. This is wilderness proper with no permanent human habitation.
Due to the lack of light pollution in the sky, night time inside Lemmenjoki National Park also allows for a very good chance of seeing the Northern Lights, if the conditions are right.
Activities
What is Backcountry Cross-Country Skiing?
This is cross-country skiing — just taken into the wild. Also known as Nordic skiing or Fjellski in Norway, backcountry cross-country skiing uses slightly wider cross-country skis with metal edges. They give you the stability and control to cut your own tracks through deep snow, across frozen lakes, and along forested valleys.
It’s all about purposeful, steady gliding through remote, snow-covered landscapes — a way to travel simply and self-sufficiently through the wilderness.
You don’t need previous cross-country ski experience to join, though it’s definitely a bonus. What matters more is that you’re comfortable with the idea of gliding, have good balance, a high level of fitness, and a mindset that can carry you through challenging conditions.
This is a beginner expedition and a brilliant introduction to winter endurance sport if you’re up for something physical and rewarding.
If you'd prefer a little more time to build your ski confidence first, one of our beginner’s cross-country ski holidays or our Backcountry Ski Adventure with more coaching might be the better place to start.
Either way, this is about getting out there, embracing the elements, and experiencing winter in its most raw and beautiful form.
Snow Shelter
Become a true winter wilderness warrior by learning how to build your own snow shelter. Not only that, but you also have the option to test it fully with a night out sleeping in it.
There will also be the opportunity to spend one night in a traditional Finnish Kota - a cosy tent-like space constructed of wooden poles and reindeer hide, similar to a teepee.
It is during these wilderness nighttime hours that you will have the best chance of experiencing the spectacular Northern Lights.
Northern Lights
We can’t guarantee you’ll see the Northern Lights, but with little to no light pollution and the northerly location you’ll be in the right place. We’ll be keeping everything crossed that mother nature delivers!
Fitness and Experience Level
-
Given its physical demands and the environment involved, we rate this trip as challenging. While you don't need any expedition or ski experience to join, a high fitness level and a can-do attitude are essential.
This trip would be ideal for those who’ve completed hut-to-hut or hiking treks, bikepacked, packrafted or taken part in any trip where you’re away from home comforts for consecutive days.
If you’re not sure whether this trip is right for you, please do get in touch.
-
Duration: Prepare for extended days in very cold conditions, with daily outings lasting up to 6-7 hours, including around 5 hours dedicated to skiing.
Distance: Expect to ski between 10 km-17 km daily. Please note, skiing these distances can feel more challenging than hiking equivalent lengths.
Intensity: Backcountry skiing is more than just sliding on snow. As we navigate diverse terrains, having good stamina is essential for the journey.
Towing and Carrying: With sledges for our gear and backpacks to carry, the weight adds an extra challenge. You’ll be towing approximately 20-25kg with you every day.
Terrain: From icy expanses to deep snowy trails and thick forests, Finnish Lapland's diverse landscapes provide a lot of beauty, but can create challenging conditions to navigate.
Sub Zero Living: Over 4 nights, anticipate rustic living with no running water or electricity, relying on log burning stoves and saunas for warmth.
Communal Living: Embrace the camaraderie! There are no private quarters; you'll bunk with fellow Gutsy Girls for the entire trip.
Consecutive Activity: Five continuous days of skiing in such conditions can be taxing. Gear up for intense, rewarding adventure days.
Mindset: A proactive and positive approach will enhance the experience. When challenges arise, dig deep and lean on the group spirit.
-
We will begin and end the expedition with nights in a comfortable log cabin with electricity, restaurant, bar, sauna, inside toilets and showers.
After this starting point, our accommodation will be in simple wilderness cabins, with no electricity or running water. These remote cabins do not have electricity or showers, and the toilets are in a shared outhouse, adding to the true wilderness experience. However they do have saunas, a by-product of which is warm, melted snow water - ideal for a quick wash and freshen up!
The cabins are lit by candles and heated by wood burning stoves, which will keep us toasty after a day of adventuring in the wilds.
One night there is the opportunity to sleep out in your self-made snow cave or embrace the wilderness for a night in an expedition tent. This is optional.
-
The majority of our meals on this trip will be expedition food. This is dehydrated food that we add boiling water to. It will provide all the energy we need for long days in the snow!
During the expedition your water will come from melting the snow around you.
Please bring your own snacks (energy / muesli bars, nuts, raisins etc) if you might need these for extra fuel during the week.
We can cater for most dietary requirements. Please let us know if you have any dietary requirements at the time of booking.
