February & March

Embark on a women-only backcountry nordic ski and winter camping adventure in the pristine fells of Sweden. This unique retreat is tailored for beginners, ensuring that over the course of the week, you'll master the basics of backcountry nordic skiing. We’ll build your confidence and skills before heading out on skis for a three day camping expedition in the snow covered wilderness.

Our base when we’re not camping is an off-grid lodge. With no electricity, our evenings are lit by candles and kept warm by the log fire.

During our stay, we'll spend our days honing your backcountry nordic skiing skills. If you're new to the sport, our metal-edged touring skis are perfect for beginners and off-track skiing. Backcountry skiing offers an experience similar to hiking but with the added excitement of gliding through the snow.

Location

The Northern Dalarna region offers a pristine wilderness experience, characterised by vast boreal forests, expansive snowcovered heathlands, and rugged fells. It’s an ancient land, and the home to many Swedish traditions. Unlike the more popular Lapland to the north, Northern Dalarna remains relatively undiscovered, providing unspoiled natural beauty without the crowds.

Our secluded cabin by Lake Navar is entirely off-grid, nestled amid rolling hills and dense spruce forests that stretch for miles. This location is perfect for honing our skiing skills and preparing for our camping expedition!

Activities

Backcountry Nordic Skiing

Backcountry nordic skiing is a bit like hiking, just with a gentle glide. It’s a beautiful way to access quiet, snow-covered wilderness and explore landscapes that feel truly remote. Moving under your own steam, you’ll find a natural rhythm and learn to balance on skis as you travel across frozen ground and through snowy forests.

No ski experience? No problem. We’ll start out on simple tracks near our base to get comfortable on skis and build confidence. Once you’ve got the basics, we’ll leave the trails behind and head into the wild, making our own way through the snow.

The terrain is low altitude and well suited for beginners, but this is still a physical adventure. You’ll be pulling a pulka (a small sled with your kit) and helping to set up camp each evening. You’ll need good balance, a decent level of fitness, and a can-do attitude, but no technical skills or ski background.

The Backcountry Expedition

The highlight of this adventure is the two-night winter camping expedition. After a few days of building confidence on your skis, we’ll make our way up onto the Fulufjället mountain plateau. Once we’ve tackled the initial ascent, we’ll reach a vast expanse of wind-swept snow. This is real alpine wilderness, with no trees, just open white landscapes stretching out to the horizon and panoramic views of the lowlands below.

Each of us will pull a pulka carrying everything we need to stay warm and well-fed in winter conditions. When we arrive at camp each evening, we’ll pitch tents and set up a shared yurt that becomes our kitchen, lounge, and cosy gathering spot. There’s nothing quite like tucking into a hot meal and sharing stories with the group while the snow piles up outside.

For those feeling adventurous, there may be the option to build and sleep in a bivouac, a compact snow shelter that’s surprisingly snug and quiet.

All the gear is designed for sub-zero temperatures, from the tents to the sleeping bags. With the right layers and a good sense of adventure, you’ll stay warm, comfortable, and fully immersed in the magic of winter camping.

Northern Lights

We can’t guarantee you’ll see the Northern Lights, but with little to no light pollution and the northerly location you’ll be in the right place. We’ll be keeping everything crossed that mother nature delivers!

Fitness and Experience Level

  • This holiday is rated moderate to challenging.

This trip is designed for beginners. No previous ski or winter sports experience is required, but a good to high fitness level and a positive mindset are essential.

This trip would be ideal for those who’ve completed short hut-to-hut or hiking treks or taken part in any trip where you’re away from home comforts for a few consecutive days.

It would also be a great place to start for anyone who’d like to try an expedition or know they’d thrive in the more basic conditions, but have never had an opportunity to give it a go.

If you’re not sure whether this trip is right for you, please do get in touch.

  • You take part in medium to high-intensity cardio exercise 3 times a week, for around 45 minutes each time.

    What That Might Look Like

Your weekly routine regularly includes activities like running, HIIT sessions, crossfit, cycling, or spin classes. While you don’t need to be a world-class athlete or breaking records, you're accustomed to workouts that raise your heart rate and leave you breathing heavily each time. Engaging in low-intensity activities, like walking, yoga, and pilates will be beneficial, but these alone won't be enough to meet the cardio demands of this trip.

  • Duration: Each day you’ll be active for around 5-6 hours.

Distance: We'll cover between 8 km to 12 km daily. Consider if you can comfortably walk these distances and on consecutive days. Remember that for three of the days you will be pulling a sled or wearing a heavy backpack to carry your belongings on your trip.

Intensity: Backcountry cross country skiing is like hiking with skis on. The day we pull the sledges behind us will also be demanding.

Balance: The wide skis with hard metal edges will give you stability, especially when you ski off track. You’ll need some balance to stay upright though!

Downhill: The trails are not overly steep, but you will need to be comfortable gaining speed on a slope.

Sliding Motion: Being comfortable with a gliding sensation is essential.

Falling: Expect a few tumbles while learning to backcountry ski. Though these falls are generally softer than in alpine skiing, you’ll need to be comfortable with the idea of hitting the ground every now and then!

Cold Exposure: While activity generates warmth, you will be experiencing sub-zero temperatures. We'll advise you on effective layering to stay warm. We provide warm camping gear for the expedition.

Consecutive Activity: This trip involves several days of consecutive skiing, which can be tiring.

If you have any questions about this, please do get in touch before booking, we're happy to help!

  • The wilderness lodge is a really special place. When we say remote wilderness, we really mean it!

The lodge is basic and completely off grid: there are wood-fired heaters to keep you warm and lanterns and candles to give us light, a sauna will warm and relax our bones, and there is a wild magical winter landscape right on our doorstep.

There are five rooms in this large cabin, a big kitchen and cosy lounge.

The toilet facilities are outside, to add to the adventure!

There are no showers, instead we’ll use the sauna and heated up water in a bucket as a shower (and icy dips in the lake if you dare) to keep us fresh!

  • You’ll enjoy delicious food on this trip! When we’re at the lodge, we will cook together. There is a gas stove, fridge and freezer, and a large kitchen area.

During our day trips and the mountain plateau expedition, we will cook some items ourselves, but we will also bring hearty nourishing soups and stews prepared in advance by our wilderness chef.

Our wilderness guides will take on the role of head chef and we invite you all to join us in preparing delicious dinners together throughout the week.

We can cater for all dietary requirements.
