July

Upgrade your exploration of the Brenta Dolomites with five days tackling one of the most complete, epic and view-fuelled via ferrata routes in Europe. You'll clip in, follow the mountain, and emerge five days later having crossed the whole thing.

Expect long days, real altitude, and terrain that demands your full attention. This isn't about ticking off a trail, it's about using iron pegs, ladders and narrow bridges to access one of the most famous suspended routes in the world, all done in a small group led by expert guides.

Nights are spent in traditional rifugios as you move from hut to hut, where you’ll eat hearty food, share dorm rooms and swap stories with the other Gutsy Girls on your trip.

Location

Tucked in to the west of the main Dolomite range, the Brenta Dolomites have fewer crowds, but the same dramatic peaks. Jagged limestone spires rip up from the valley floor, creating that iconic Dolomite skyline you've been scrolling past for years. It’s also home to one of the most complete and adrenaline pumping via ferrata systems in the world: the Bocchette Way.

You’ll start in an upmarket alpine town, before heading into these incredible mountains for five days of navigating metal wires, ladders and bridges.

Via Ferrata

Meaning “iron way” in Italian, via ferratas are a protected system of fixed metal cables, ladders, pegs, and stirrups, anchored into the rock to help you progress through mountainside terrain that would otherwise need ropes and technical skills to master. Although first introduced by adventurers in the 1800s to tackle mountain paths, they rose in prominence during World War 1 as a way to move troops around the borders of Austria and Italy.

Somewhere between scrambling, hiking and climbing, you clip your harness directly onto a cable as you move to ensure you’re always attached to the mountain, then follow the route ahead, wherever it may take you.

Via ferrata doesn't require any climbing experience, but you do need a genuine head for heights, good fitness, and the ability to use your arms as much as your legs for hours at a time. Also be prepared for adrenaline boosts, jaw-dropping views and the biggest sense of achievement ever.

The Bocchette Way

The legendary Via delle Bocchette is composed of several secured paths, using natural ridges and eroded alcoves to create a via ferrata system that’s on every adventurer's bucket list. Made up of a linked series of equipped routes, the path runs right across the Brenta mountains from north to south. The exposure is real and sustained, but the views are relentless.

The Four Routes

Sosat Route - Your introduction to the trip. A well-established route that uses long metal ladders and pegs to climb the eastern side of the Brenta mountains.

Brentari Route - A route that moves along the south face of Cima Tosa, running between ledges, rocky terrain and scree slopes at high altitude.

Bocchette Centrali - The most famous stretch. High exposure, aerial passages, and the moment you walk beneath Campanil Basso, one of the most striking rock towers in the Alps.

Bocchette Alte - The hardest section, with impressive vertical ladders, long exposed ledges, and the Scala degli Amici: a 30-metre ladder that takes you to Spallone dei Massodi, the highest point of the whole traverse.

Activities

Fitness and Experience Level

  • This trip is rated challenging.

Spending a week navigating a via ferrata is hard work. You'll be using your arms and upper body continuously, navigating exposed terrain for three or more hours each day, and doing it across five consecutive days with some sizable ascents. The hut lifestyle of early mornings, shared spaces and no recovery days is also part of the physical reality too. Oh, and you’ll be carrying all your stuff throughout.

  • Daily effort: Plan for 5-7 hours moving each day, with the via ferrata sections running 3-4 hours within that. Day six is the longest at around seven hours, including approximately four hours on the via ferrata. For three of the four via ferrata days, you’ll also be carrying your overnight stuff as you move between huts.

Ascent: Between 700m and 1,000m per day across variable terrain: rock, scree, ladders, and ledges.

Arms and upper body: A via ferrata uses your whole body. You’ll be using grip strength, pulling yourself up ladders and bracing on exposed sections, all of which uses muscles a normal hiking week wouldn't touch.

Exposure: The Bocchette Centrali and Bocchette Alte both include sustained sections with significant drops on one or both sides. A genuine head for heights is non-negotiable for this trip.

Consecutive days: Five active days with no rest day built in. You need to arrive fit enough to handle day five feeling like days one to four haven’t already happened.

Heights: There’s a lot of them. You’ll be in the mountains, often tackling routes with drops on one or both sides. If you’re even remotely scared of heights, this isn’t the trip for you.

Communal living: For four out of six nights on this trip you’ll be staying in dorm rooms in busy mountain huts. This means shared living spaces, communal bathrooms and dining areas used by everyone - excellent for sharing stories and meeting new people, terrible if you’re a very light sleeper.

  • This trip is for regular hikers with mountain experience who are ready to step it up, or anyone who’s been bitten by the via ferrata bug and wants to try more. You don't need prior via ferrata experience, but solid mountain fitness, an ease with heights, and confidence on steep and rocky terrain is necessary. If you regularly hike with real ascents, run, or train consistently, you're in the right territory. If your last big walk was a while ago or you felt a bit wobbly last time you were up high, this is not the trip to ease back in on.

  • For the first and last night of the trip you’ll stay in a comfortable 3-star hotel with twin rooms, hot showers, a small wellness centre and a restaurant.  For the rest of the adventure you’ll be bedding down each night in rifugio -  traditional mountain huts. Here you’ll be in shared dormitories with other Gutsy Girls on your trip, eating hearty prepared meals and swapping stories with other adventurers.

  • Fuel up with breakfast, enjoy packed lunches on the trails and then tuck into dinners at the mountain huts along the route. Embrace regional cooking and alpine specialities - big, filling plates designed for people who have been outside all day.

Dietary requirements can be catered for, however we need to know in advance and options may be very limited. In the mountain huts the kitchens are very basic so it can’t be guaranteed that there would be no cross contamination. Drinks and anything extra are on you.
