Get in the saddle and ride through Norwegian valleys with scenery that'll make you stop mid-trot. This horse riding holiday pairs you with Norwegian Døle horses, bred for mountain terrain, as you tackle river crossings and rocky paths with expert guides, making this a real riding adventure.
The week builds to a full-day ride to a traditional summer farm. Three hours through birch forests to feast on homemade waffles while your horse grazes.
Stay in a mountain lodge with great food, sauna and wild swimming (if you're up for it)! Small groups, Norwegian guides who know every trail - it’s the kind of week that'll have you checking flights back to Norway.
Location
Nestled on the edge of Rondane National Park is a rider’s paradise, offering uncrowded trails that wind through birch forests and open plateaus alongside blue lakes. The stunning mountain scenery provides the ideal backdrop for seasoned riders seeking adventure. With its diverse terrain and peaceful surroundings, every ride is an opportunity to delve deeper into the Norwegian mountains and access areas you only can on horse back.
Activities
Horse ride in the Norwegian mountains
Experienced riders, this is your chance to explore Norway's mountain trails on horseback. Partner with a Norwegian Døle horse and ride through dense forest trails that open into wildflower meadows, backed by dramatic peaks.
These calm, agile horses are built for mountain terrain with stamina and sure footing to carry you confidently across rocky paths, river crossings, and steep climbs. Expert instructors will sharpen your abilities through daily rides across this varied landscape.
No arena work - just you, your horse, and awe-inspiring landscapes.
Norwegian Døle horses matched to your ability
Expert local instruction and guiding
Trail rides through varied mountain terrain
Skills building in stunning wilderness landscapes
Out of the Saddle
Time in the stables is just as rewarding as the trail rides. Get hands-on with the Døle horses, learning about their care, grooming routines, and feeding patterns while developing your understanding of horse body language and building that deeper bond with your four-legged partner.
Away from the horses, work with a physiotherapist on targeted exercises designed specifically for equestrians. Core strengthening, balance work, and stretching sessions will improve your performance in the saddle and help prevent injury.
Full Day Ride
This is the week's highlight - a full-day ride to a Norwegian summer farm. Pack your saddlebags with snacks and head out for a three-hour ride over two mountain peaks and through birch forests.
At the summer farm, your horse gets turned out to graze while you tuck into sour cream porridge, cured meats, fresh waffles, and seasonal berries. The farm host talks you through traditional mountain farming and how these remote farms used to work.
The ride back takes under two hours through birch forest. Long day, good food, tired legs - exactly what you came for.
Yoga
Stretch out those saddle-sore muscles with yoga sessions designed for post-riding recovery. Three sessions help your body recover from long days in the saddle and at the stables. When weather allows, take your practice lakeside for mountain views that beat any studio.
Three yoga sessions (all levels welcome)
Post-riding muscle recovery focus
Lakeside practice when weather permits
Wild Swimming
Follow Norwegian tradition with sauna sessions and wild lake swimming (if you're brave enough for mountain water that'll wake every nerve ending).
Fitness and Experience Level
-
We’ve rated this trip as moderate, with physical activity that will challenge you, but nothing too extreme. Expect to be active, but not overwhelmed.
-
To fully enjoy this adventure, riders must be confident at both trot and canter.
Steering should be second nature—if you need to consciously think about how to guide your horse left and right, this may not be the trip for you.
You must be able to mount and dismount independently, whether to open a gate, navigate rough terrain, or take a break.
Riders should feel comfortable leading their horse on foot over rocky or uneven ground if needed.
For safety reasons and to maintain a smooth group dynamic, those who do not meet the required riding skill level will not be able to join. -
If you’re in good physical shape and confident in your riding abilities, this will be the perfect holiday for you. It’s all about having fun, improving your skills, and exploring the surroundings at your own pace.
-
Our horses are well-trained, responsive, and a pleasure to ride. They are calm, reliable, and used to the terrain—think steady and surefooted rather than highly strung. If you’ve previously ridden thoroughbreds or competition horses, you’ll find these Norwegian horses far more relaxed but still full of personality. Our horses have a weight limit of 100kg. We can check the stables for other horses if required, so do check with us before booking if needed!
-
This trip requires riders to be independent and capable of handling their horse in a variety of situations. While our guides are always there for support, you need to be confident managing your own mount—whether that’s navigating obstacles, adjusting your pace, or responding to changes in terrain.
-
You'll stay at a family-run mountain hotel where every window frames views that go on forever. Think cosy and traditional; a comfortable lounge, a yoga studio for morning stretches, a sauna to ease tired muscles, and a lake cold enough to take your breath away if you fancy a wild swim.
-
The food is hearty Norwegian fare, built to fuel long days outdoors. Breakfast and lunch to keep you moving, three-course dinners to help you wind down. Whatever your dietary requirements, we've got you covered - just tell us ahead of time.
