New to winter sports? Cross-country skiing is where you should start. The learning curve is much faster than downhill skiing – you'll make quick progress over just a few days, and it's easier on the knees too.
Each day brings different trails and terrain as your skills develop. From easy lakeside loops on day two to full-day wilderness routes by the end of the week. Your instructor teaches technique as you go, building your confidence and stamina. Mid-week, trade skis for kayaks on Norway's longest fjord before a final big mountain day.
Stay at a modern lodge hotel with a spectacular riverside sauna that hangs over the Begna River. Three-course dinners featuring local mountain ingredients, small groups, and yoga sessions with incredible views. Everything's arranged so you can focus on learning and exploring.
Location
Tyin Filefjell sits at 1,000m above sea level between Lake Tyin and Filefjell, where the mountains meet the fjords at the gateway to Jotunheimen National Park. One of Southern Norway's snowiest areas, winter brings deep powder and hundreds of kilometres of prepared cross-country ski tracks stretching through forests and across high mountain plateaus. Forget the tourist-packed resorts though - this is where wilderness enthusiasts come to explore remote terrain, away from the crowds.
The Cross-Country Skiing
The trail network offers varied terrain, from gentle valley tracks, perfect for beginners, to rolling hills and longer routes that'll challenge you by the end of the week. It’s small-scale compared to other ski centres, which means you'll have space to find your rhythm without navigating hoards of other skiers.

Cross-Country Skiing
New to winter sports? Cross-country skiing is where you should start. The learning curve is much faster than downhill skiing, so you'll make quick progress over just a few days, and it's easier on the knees too.
Each day we'll explore stunning wilderness areas and improve your technique. It's a great full-body workout, and you'll access incredible remote locations that most people never see. Ski and boot hire, expert tuition, and experienced instructors are all included – our itineraries are designed to build your cross-country skills and help you get the most out of your holiday with us.
Included:
Ski & boot hire
Expert tuition
Experienced instructors
Views for days
Sea Kayaking
Mid-week, we swap skis for paddles and head to Norway's longest and deepest fjord, Sognefjord. It’s a different kind of challenge that rests your ski legs while your upper body does a bit more work.
Paddle between towering mountains, surrounded by the kind of landscape that makes Norway legendary, then warm up in the nearby sauna. No kayaking experience needed, our guides will teach you the moves. For those who want, there’s also an option to embrace your inner polar bear and take a dip in the winter-cold fjord.
Included:
Expert kayaking guide
All kayaking equipment
Mobile sauna session
Optional fjord swimming
Yoga
Practice your warrior pose with mountain views. After long days on snowy trails, stretch and strengthen with our yoga sessions. We work with local yoga instructors who understand what cross-country skiing does to your body and what you need to recover. This isn't Instagram yoga, it's functional stretching that means you'll be ready to ski again the next day.
Riverside Sauna
After a long day in the mountains, head to the riverside sauna. Perched beside the Begna river with Mt. Skørsnøse dominating the view, this is where tired legs recover and minds switch off as you feel your muscles unknot.
Included:
Three sauna sessions
River views
Post-ski recovery
Fitness and Experience Level
-
This trip is rated moderate.
This will suit active women who want to learn a new winter sport but still enjoy proper comfort at the end of the day. If you're ready for consecutive active days, want expert instruction, and can handle the physical demands of back to back days of activity, all whilst learning something new, then this is for you.
-
6-7 hours active daily, split into two sessions or occasional full days. You'll cover 8-15km daily which, on cross country skis, is way more demanding than walking these distances.
-
The reality
Cross-country skiing feels like "running with skis on." Long flat sections and uphill climbs are physically demanding, so you need good fitness. It’s worth it for the downhill though.
Speed and gliding
This sport is all about generating speed and momentum through gliding. You'll pick up pace sometimes on gentle slopes so if sliding makes you nervous, this isn't your sport.
Falling
You'll take tumbles while learning. The falls are softer than in alpine skiing, but you need to be comfortable with hitting the snow and getting back up.
If you've skied before
It doesn’t matter if you’ve skied before. Cross-country and alpine/downhill skiing are completely different sports. Even seasoned downhill skiers start as a beginner here.
Real talk
If you enjoy getting your heart rate up, don't mind falling over, and are comfortable with gliding and speed, you'll love this.
-
Your home for the week is a cosy mountain lodge. Twin and private rooms with private facilities, that spectacular riverside sauna, and a yoga space with mountain views. It's comfortable, cosy, and positioned perfectly for accessing the cross-country trail network.
-
Start each day with the hotel’s famous breakfast buffet where you'll also pack your lunch for the trails. Dinners are three-course affairs in the restaurant, focusing on local ingredients from the mountains and nearby fjords. Think hearty meals designed to refuel after long active days.
We accommodate most dietary requirements with advance notice. Please check with our Booking Team before securing your spot though to ensure we can cater for your dietary needs.
